SCOTTSDALE — The third baseman of the future plays one more Arizona Fall League game tonight. Nolan Arenado has gone from intriguing prospect to a legtimate competitor for a big league roster spot in spring training. Such is the case when a 20-year-old dominates the fall league after driving in 122 RBIs for Class-A Modesto. Still, jumping from Class-A to the big leagues is a quantum leap. Arenado, even with a strong spring, might need more minor-league seasoning. So where does that leave the current third base situation? Jordan Pacheco is in the mix. So is Chris Nelson. And Ian Stewart and Ty Wigginton are possibilities, though it’s likely one or both will be traded this winter. To add depth and insurance, the Rockies signed former Angels’ top prospect Brandon Wood on a minor-league deal. Wood, 26, never panned out for the Angels, unable to lock down their third base job.
