The Reds recently announced that moving Aroldis Chapman to the rotation is not in the near future. I picked Chapman up the first week of the season when vultured his second win and since then he’s been nothing short of lights out. The problem – and this is why he went un-drafted in the league – is that he’s only the set-up man in Cincinnati. I’ve been waiting for the imminent move to the starting rotation, but now it seems I’m destined to play the waiting game for awhile longer.

All my thoughts about waiting got me thinking about how the chorus of one of my favorite songs applies to having Aroldis Chapman on my fantasy roster.

(I like Eddie Vedder’s version much more than Tom Petty’s)

“The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part”

“The waiting is the hardest part”

You know he’s going to be amazing when he’s finally a starter. So far this season he is 2-0 with 23 strike outs in 13 innings and a WHIP of .675. The things he could do with more innings…

“Every day you see one more card”

Every time Chapman takes the mound you see the potential, but it’s that potential that holds him back in some ways. The Reds don’t want to blow him out, and they are playing alright – so there’s no huge push for Chapman to join the rotation. Plus, they are short in the bullpen as it is and Chapman has been lights out in his 8th inning role.

“You take it on faith, you take it to the heart”

The Reds have said since the day they signed him that Chapman would be in their rotation eventually – it’s why they gave him so much money. So- if anything – you’ve got to have faith in the cash. Also, you’ve seen it first hand; the complete and utter domination of any team he faces. You know in your heart that night in and night out – Aroldis Chapman has the most elctrifying stuff in the entire MLB.

“The waiting is the hardest part”

But even with all the talent, and the numbers – can you keep a relief pitcher rostered who hasn’t had a save all season? Nevermind that the only way he could get a win would be by vulturing one, and those are about as realiable as a Terrell Owens child support payment. Is it worth hurting your teams stats now for the possible rewards down the road?

I guess the answer to that is in the last line of the song:

“Dont let this go to far, dont let it get to you.”

Hang on to Chapman as long as you can, but don’t let it affect your team.
