One of the challenges when it comes to ranking players by position in fantasy baseball is trying to determine which player is going to have that breakout season and return a profit to your auction buy or draft pick. When reviewing the list of shortstops for the 2013 season, my pick to break out is Josh Rutledge of the Colorado Rockies Rutledge was promoted from Double-A Tulsa last season and made a solid impression with the Rockies, hitting .274 in 277 at bats with eight home runs, 37 RBI and seven stolen bases. First the positives. He stole seven bases without getting caught and he had an 82% success rate in the minor leagues. He also hit .320 in 855 career minor league at bats with 22 home runs so he has a little bit of pop in his bat. On the flip side, he is going to need to improve his plate discipline. With only nine walks and 54 strikeouts in 277 at bats, he is going to see more pitches out of the strike zone in 2013 to see if he is going to chase them. Remember that he jumped from Double-A to the major leagues so it remains to be seen how he will adjust to pitchers the second time around the league. 2013 Fantasy Projection for Josh Rutledge Heading into the 2013 season, Rutledge has a couple of things working in his favor. One, he plays half of his games in Coors Field which gives him some upside for his batting average. He also has a good chance of hitting second in the batting order which if true would add about 10-15 more runs scored to his projection above.
