Of all that is annoying about this Blue Jays season what makes it just a little bit worse a little bit more raw a little more venomous is that John Farrell is in first place. And the Blue Jays are in last. Who saw that coming last October when Alex Anthopoulos had what he thought was the winter of his dreams before John Gibbons was hired when Farrell said thanks but no thanks to the Blue Jays and decided to take his talents to Kenmore Square. Who saw this coming the Red Sox have gone from last to first the Blue Jays hoping for first certain to be last and Farrell doing everything but smiling like the Benedict Arnold version of the Cheshire cat as the Red Sox began their second series in Toronto — with more wins now than they had all of last year and the Blue Jays unsure whether they will match the 73-win club Farrell left behind. It looked so different in January: The Blue Jays so excited about Jose Reyes and R.A. Dickey so excited about Josh Johnson and Melky Cabrera so excited about Mark Buehrle and the return of Darren Oliver. So excited until the season began. The Jays made headlines in the winter errors in the summer. The Red Sox did the quiet things. They added Shane Victorino. They added Mike Napoli. They added everybody’s favourite coach Brian Butterfield. But that didn’t put them in first place. Dustin Pedroia did that with a little help from Jacoby Ellsbury a return to form of David Ortiz (imagine that a player recovering his form at age 37). Blue Jays manager John Gibbons talked about the Red Sox with a certain admiration in his daily pre-game address. He called their best players hardened. He called them winners. He did so with a certain kind of appreciation.
