The Bucs’ 2012 season ended with a bit of whimper on Wednesday afternoon, as they lost in a lifeless fashion that was representative of much of their play in August and September. The loss dropped their final record to 79-83.

A.J. Burnett had an uninspiring final start, as the Braves singled him to death and stole three key bases. He ended up allowing all four runs in just 5.2 innings, but came off the mound to a well-deserved ovation for his excellent season. His ERA ended up at 3.51, and he fell to 16-10 with the loss.

The Pirates did nothing against a parade of Braves pitchers, as Ben Sheets pitched just one inning (a very good one) in his final career start. The Bucs notched just four hits – none for extra bases – and didn’t draw a walk. Andrew McCutchen had one of the hits and finished with a .327 average (not enough to catch Buster Posey), and was pulled in the eighth so the crowd could give him a great ovation.

The most exciting moment of the afternoon was probably Chipper Jones‘  pinch hit single off Burnett in his final regular season plate appearance. It was a lame performance by the Bucs, so it’s a good thing it didn’t mean anything.

It’s been a painful couple of months and I’m glad to be done for now, but it’s always sad to see the season come to a close. 179 days until Opening Day 2013.

Braves 4, Pirates 0 / Box / 2012 Record: 79-83 / Next: 2013 Opening Day, April 1 (vs. Cubs)

MVP: Snider (+.019) / LVP: Burnett (-.176) / Key play: Uggla’s 4th inning RBI single
