Protecting Howard, is Ruf the guy?

With the call-up of Darin Ruf what can we expect from him and how many opportunities will he get from Charlie Manuel? I for one am anxious to see if he can bring the same power to the majors that he has exhibited this season in Reading. Breaking Ryan Howards home run record certainly gets you noticed and also noticed by the fans. Ruf’s 38 home runs impressive alone but what is equally impressive is his plus .300 batting average all despite striking out 1 in every 5 at-bats. With these numbers it is easy to see why the kid will and should get a real look. We have seen plenty from Mayberry this season and what is clear, Mayberry is no more then a platoon player.

In taking a hard look at Ruf in the weeks remaining the team will figure out if they have in their farm system protection for Ryan Howard next season. If Ruf can hit in the big leagues he will see a trip to winter ball to prepare him for the outfield. I would think if he can remotely resemble Pat Burrell he will be the starting left fielder and hopefully provide 30 homers a year protecting the big man.Similar Posts:
