For some unknown reason that defies comprehension, the below video of a first base coach getting hit in the crotchal region by a pitcher’s pickoff throw took nearly a year to begin garnering attention on the interwebs. That’s right, this video was originally uploaded to YouTube way back in May of 2012 but it wasn’t until the past few days that it started making the rounds. And once you see it, you will be left wondering why tons of teams doing “Call Me Maybe” lip sync videos can attract hundreds of thousands of views yet something as delightful as this video can go virtually unnoticed for such a long time. USA Today’s Ted Berg performs a breakdown of the video that he originally was made aware of by Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler’s Twitter account on Tuesday: Based on the front and back of the first baseman’s uniform, it seems likely he’s Diamondbacks farmhand Tyler Bream. But the pitcher’s last name is Valdez, and Bream has not had a teammate by that name in either of his regular-season stops — meaning this is likely an instructional league or minor league spring training game. So there’s some chance the first-base coach in question is a young player doing double-duty… In the end and in the grand scheme of things, the true identity of the first base coach matters little. What is important is how hilarious it is to see him get drilled squarely in the crotch by the ball. Well, hilarious for everyone but him. I imagine whoever this guy may be, he still would cringe a bit if he watched the video to this day.
