By STEVE KORNACKIFOXSPORTSDETROIT.COMDETROIT Miguel Cabrera went through a series of tests withTigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand about three hours before game time, andis back in the starting lineup Saturday night. He will bat third and play thirdbase rather than easing back in as a designated hitter.Cabrera missed four consecutive games with a sore left hip,and Tigers manager Jim Leyland has been delaying his decisions on whether ornot to play him until hes evaluated before games. This time, he passed thetest administered by Rand.Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has overtakenhim with 97 RBIs to Cabreras 96, and Davis has a 37-31 homer lead on Cabrera.Using Cabrera as a designated hitter is not an easy movebecause Victor Martinez has been hot in that role, and moving him to first basewould force Prince Fielder out of the lineup which isnt going to happen.TORIIS BACK: DetroitTigers right fielder Torii Hunter was back in the starting lineup after sittingout Fridays game with a sore left Achilles tendon, and felt fortunate to beback after missing only one game. Achilles injuries can be difficult to recoverquickly from.Im thankful it wasnt nothing too serious, Hunter saidbefore Saturdays game with the Philadelphia Phillies. Yesterday and todaywere totally different; Im glad I gave it another day to heal ... Its good itsdefinitely good enough to play.Hunter showed discomfort in his fourth at-bat Thursdayagainst the White Sox in Chicago, and came out of the game. He blamed theinjury on some new dress shoes, but did hit a two-run homer off Jake Peavybefore coming out.Hes been one of the American Leagues most productivehitters in July. Hunter is batting .349 (seventh in the league) with sixhomers, 18 RBIs (second) and 17 runs scored (third) this month.LEYLAND'S & MANUELS LONG FRIENDSHIP: Leyland, 68, and Phillies manager CharlieManuel, 69, have managed 5,280 major league games between them. But theirfriendship goes back to nearly 40 years ago, when both were minor leagueplayers.Manuel wasnt sure if they first met in 1964, when he was a power-hittingleft fielder with Orlando of the Florida State League and Leyland was a defensivecatcher for Lakeland, or in 1966, when Leyland was with Rocky Mount and Manuelplayed for Wilson in the Carolina League.Leyland was a little, skinny guy, said Manuel, who was6-foot-4 and 195 pounds as a player. He had a good arm and was a gooddefensive catcher.A smile creased Manuels face talking about Leyland.Hes a baseball guy, Manuel said. Hes a baseball rat. Iguarantee you he smokes 10 packs of cigarettes and his wife probably sends himto another room when he loses. Hes a character yeah, Leylands a character.Hes a good manager and good for the game.Leyland also cherishes his long friendship with the folksyManuel. I first got to know him as an opponent, Leyland said. Hesa very good person. Hes a very good baseball guy. And hes very knowledgeableabout hitting. And were from the same era.Leyland has 1,733 wins in the majors, and Manuel has 996while managing the Cleveland Indians (2000-2002) and the Phillies since 2005. Bothhave won one World Series -- Leyland with the 1997 Florida Marlins and Manuelwith the 2008 Phillies. INJURY UPDATES:Leyland said the left ankle sprain of second baseman Omar Infanteremained status quo with Infante not close to returning after aggravating theinjury Thursday on a rehabilitation assignment while fielding a grounder in aWest Michigan game.Left-handed reliever Darin Downs rehab was moved from WestMichigan to Toledo, but Leyland said he was unsure if one more outing would beenough for Downs to return to the Detroit roster.BULLPEN UPDATE: Leyland said all seven relievers areavailable Saturday night.NOTES: Tigers catcherAlex Avila is batting .583 (7-for-12) with runners in scoring position thismonthSaturday night starting pitcher Max Scherzer was celebrating his 29thbirthday.
