The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Justin Morneau today for Alex Presley and a PTBNL, who is reportedly Duke Welker. For our analysis on the first part of the deal, check out the trade article. I was thinking about the two players involved in the deal, and thinking about how they got to where they were. First, this is another deal where the Pirates are getting short-term help, but not giving up anything they will miss. Morneau is a better option than Presley this year. Presley would have been lost in the mix of outfielders in September that will include Jose Tabata, Travis Snider, Felix Pie, Andrew Lambo, and maybe even guys like Jerry Sands. Morneau should start at first, and when he’s not starting, he’s the top bat off the bench. Next year Presley is out of options, and once again would have been lost in the mix, or DFAd over the winter. Welker is a good relief prospect, but the Pirates haven’t had any issues finding guys like that. When I was looking over the September call-ups, I d...

Pirates Notebook: Introducing Justin Morneau

Justin Morneau is here. The first baseman arrived in Pittsburgh at approximately 7:50 last night and made it into the Pirates’ dugout sometime between the fifth and sixth inning. “I knew what the score was. I checked the score when I landed,” Morneau said. “We were listening to it on the radio on the way in.” When he arrived at the moment, Morneau arrived to an image that...

Long rumored to be a trade candidate, Twins first baseman Justin Monreau has finally been dealt. Minnesota traded Morneau to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday in exchange for outfielder Alex Presley and a player to be named later or cash. Morneau, 32, has spent his entire major league career with Minnesota after the Twins drafted him in the third round in 1999. He won the American...

Earlier this week, the Pirates made a deal with the New York Mets for outfielder Marlon Byrd and catcher John Buck. Morneau had cleared waivers earlier this month. Any...

Justin Morneau traded

Well, it happened. The Twins traded longtime first base fixture Justin Morneau to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In return, Minnesota will receive outfielder Alex Presley as well as a player to be named later or cash. From a strictly baseball perspective, this is a trade that makes sense. Morneau is going to be a free agent at the end of the year, and he isn’t going to help the Twins...

Pirates acquire Justin Morneau from Twins

The Pittsburgh Pirates are all-in. Mere days after acquiring Marlon Byrd and John Buck from the Mets, Pittsburgh has acquired Twins first baseman Justin Morneau in exchange for outfielder Alex Presley, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox. I think this tweet from TOC staffer Pat Lackey (also the editor of the fabulous Pirates blog WHYGAVS) sums things up perfectly. SOME...

Pirates take NL Central lead

The latest addition by the suddenly splurging Pittsburgh Pirates hustled into the dugout in the sixth inning on Saturday night eager to step into the batter's box against St. Louis if necessary. Take a breath, Justin Morneau. The Pirates -- and the pennant race -- aren't going anywhere. A.J. Burnett scattered four hits over seven innings, Russell Martin hit a three-run...

Newest Twins stand out in 4-2 win over Rangers

Alex Presley was describing his first day with the Twins after Sunday’s 4-2 victory over the Rangers was enjoying how much his three hits helped eliminate some of that Hello-My-Name-Is awkwardness with his teammates when it was pointed out he had been given the don’t-steal sign before the fifth-inning pitch on which he was yes thrown out stealing. “Oh — that was a no-go...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 136

Well hello friends.  It’s been a week since we last did this and let me say, it’s been a big one.  Marlon Byrd, John Buck, and yesterday’s acquisition of Justin Morneau have really changed the look of this team.  The bench is better.  Catching depth is better.  Rightfield is better. If you wanted “all in”…

Alex Presley, Josmil Pinto shine in debut with Twins

The two newest Minnesota Twins make the biggest impact Sunday in their team's 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers. Center fielder Alex Presley and catcher Josmil Pinto both made their Twins debuts -- and for Pinto, his major league debut -- on Sunday, and they combined for five hits and a pair of RBI in Minnesota's victory. It was Pinto, the 24-year-old from Venezuela, who opened...

Rangers drop series to Twins

What a downer weekend of baseball. The Rangers scored just seven runs off the Minnesota Twins in three games.  Seven. They scored more than that in three innings of Felix Hernandez pitching. But that’s exactly why I never look at any series as a gimme.  There are no gimmes in baseball.  Every team will have a good stretch and every team will have a bad stretch. The Rangers are...

Newcomers, Correia lead Twins to 4-2 win at Texas

Alex Presley and Josmil Pinto quickly fit in with Minnesota. Both players enjoyed a memorable debut for the Twins during their series-clinching 4-2 victory over the AL West-leading Texas Rangers on Sunday. ''I couldn't envision a better start for myself, to get a win and be able to contribute,'' said Presley, who had three hits and an RBI a day after being traded...
