There are 30 teams with eight or nine offensive players on a team, five (or more) starting pitchers, one closer per team and some tantalizing bench players and middle relievers. But like those fantasy games, the question in this game…where can I find value? Well I’m here to give you some good off-brand talent. So here are some good players from bad teams. These teams all had losing records in 2012 and the players are non-obvious options on these bad teams (David Wright on the Mets is not an amazing find). The key here is to find value that others may overlook in the draft. These aren’t necessarily sleepers, but guys who could come at a good price on draft day. Today, I’ll be taking a look at corner infielders. FIRST BASEMEN Michael Cuddyer played in only 101 games last season, hitting 260 with 16 HR, 58 RBI, 53 R and 8 SB. Spread that out o...

Roster Musical Chairs in Full Swing
LHP Jeff Beliveau was Designated for Assignment yesterday, and 3B Ian Stewart has been officially added to the 40-man roster, so now the Cubs just need to clear one more slot for free-agent OF Nate Schierholtz.
Although it might sound strange, the Cubs could outright Stewart to the minors (but with an NRI to Spring Training) to make room for Schierholtz on the 40, just like when...
The Flagrant Fan on Alfonso Soriano’s contract
Most of the time when you read an article about Alfonso Soriano's contract, it's about how the bad contract is a reflection on Soriano. The Flagrant Fan writes a nice piece and here's the part that I and others have tried to hammer home for years: What a player makes is the team's problem and [...]
Chicago Cubs hot stove league ramblings
Christmas is ten days away, the stove is boiling and I am toiling. The signing of Josh Hamilton appears to have amped up the heat this winter and those waiting to sign are going to get it moving soon.
So, let’s just get down to the BRASS TACKS and go on a little rambling adventure … or just make a flurry of disjointed, yet hopefully timely remarks.

Judging Alfonso Soriano by his contract
When a baseball player signs a historically bad contract, he ceases to be judged by his play on the field. Instead he is judged against his contract. There seems to be something unfair about that. Alfonso Soriano, like Zito on the Giants, will always be looked at with skepticism. He is ridiculed and derided for the fact that he cannot earn his pay. Is that really fair? The Cubs...
Finding the Cubs Helpful Spirit Guides
The offseason can be a cold and dark place sometimes. The Cubs aren’t likely to bid for any FA’s of note anymore as we enter year 2 of the grand rebuilding project that TheoCo has imagined for a franchise in desperate need of it. We are also, in all likelihood looking at another year of 90+ losses. Let’s not worry about that for now. Join me as I take a step back from the...
Rant Sports: The Chicago Cubs Continue To Prove They’re a Joke In Failed Anibal Sanchez Signing
If blogs could be designated for assignment, Rant Sports, along with Bleacher Report, would have been DFA'd a long time ago. They're not even replacement level blogs worthy of the minimal amount of attention, but here we are: paying attention to them because there isn't anything else to write about. So why not make fun [...]
