SAN FRANCISCO Tigers pitcher Doug Fister will forever be known as a tough guy. In the second inning of Game 2 of the World Series, the Giants' Gregor Blanco hit a line drive right at Fister, who ducked but still got hit on the right side of his head. Athletic trainer Kevin Rand and manager Jim Leyland ran out to the mound to check on Fister. FOX's audio feed had Rand giving Fister a quick concussion test. Fister immediately answered, "San Francisco. Game 2." Rand then asked if Fister knew how many outs there were. "Two," Fister replied. "Get the third," Rand said. Fister eventually did. After walking Brandon Crawford to load the bases, he induced pitcher Madison Bumgarner to pop out. VALVERDE DONE? The mystery that is Jose Valverde remains after Game 1 of the World Series. Valverde, who famously blew Game 4 in the ALDS against the Oakland A's and Game 1 in the ALCS against the New York Yankees, finally pitched again Wednesday night. Leyland brought Valverde in to start the bottom of the seventh with the Tigers trailing 6-1. Valverde managed to retire just one batter, pitcher Tim Lincecum before allowing two runs on four hits before giving way to Joaquin Benoit. Valverde, who had worked with pitching coach Jeff Jones to correct some mechanical issues, felt like he threw the ball fairly well. "Everything working good for me," Valverde said. "I have my sinker, my split, my cutter. Everythings good. "You have to give credit for the hitters. You know what I mean? Sandoval, Pagan, Scutaro, Posey. Everybody, you know what I mean. They hit my best pitches." Valverde talked about the things he had worked on. "My mechanics are much better," he said. "My leg is more quicker, and my hands, too. Thats it. My delivery is more quick right now. Thats what I have to do." Leyland was asked again about Valverde before Game 2. "I certainly don't think he was bad (Wednesday) night," Leyland said. "He wasn't real good. "The biggest thing with Valverde is the same thing bit him last night a little bit that's bitten him all year where he's been too much in the middle of the plate. Valverde now has a postseason ERA of 9.82 and a sparkling 54.00 in the World Series. Jhonny Peralta said they're just trying to give Valverde as much support as they can. "It happens for a lot of players," Peralta said. "Valverde right now, it's not a good moment for him. "But we try to support, we try to talk to him and let him know forget about what happened yesterday or the day before and try to go for the next game." Considering it's the World Series and Valverde is not getting results, it's unlikely he'll be used in a close situation the rest of the way.
