After Thursday’s game, the Marlins announced that effective Friday Mike Lamb would be designated for assignment and Bryan Petersen promoted from Triple-A New Orleans. Lamb won the left-handed pinch-hitter job in spring training and in that role this season was 4 for 15 (.267) with three RBI.
The move potentially is more about a shake-up atop the order. Chris Coghlan went 1 for 4 Thursday, but he’s still batting .182 with a .240 on-base percentage and still doesn’t have an extra-base hit 93 at-bats into the season. Maybin, who did not start Thursday, excelled in the leadoff spot for a while but has since tailed off, going 5 for 34 (.147) on the just completed 3-6 homestand.
Petersen got a long look in spring training withCody Ross and Brett Carroll both missing time with injuries. Through 26 games with the Zephyrs, Petersen hit .290 with four doubles, a triple, a homer and a .377 on-base percentage.
