With less than a week before the regular season opener, the third base situation remains unsettled. Rodriguez wants a strong defender there, but here’s the problem: Asked who his best candidate is, Rodriguez said: “Right now, our best defender is in the minor leagues [Matt Dominguez]. [Donnie] Murphy has been playing very solid third base. Right now I would say Murphy is the best defender…’We put together this team with pitching and defense in mind. It’s very important to have the best defender at third base.” Murphy, Greg Dobbs and Emilio Bonifacio all have gotten reps at third the last couple of days. Rodriguez said he doesn’t envision a platoon. The possibility remains that the Marlins can look outside the organization for a full-time option.
