The Marlins acquired Jose Ceda in 2008 and probably figured he would be a featured member of their major league bullpen by now. It finally appears Ceda, who drew Edwin Rodriguez’s ire when he arrived to spring training overweight, is fulfilling his promise.
As of Friday at Triple-A New Orleans, Ceda in 14 games has converted all 10 save opportunities with a 0.56 ERA in 16 innings. He’s struck out 19, walked five and is holding opponents to a .167 batting average.
“He’s a big guy and throws hard obviously, but that’s not what’s [driving] the success,” former Zephyrs teammate Burke Badenhop said. “He’s got a really good cutter going for him right now, like a cutter/slider type deal. He’s not blowing guys away. He’s getting ahead with his fastball and using a really good cutter.
