ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Evan Longoria has suffered from plantar fasciitis in his right foot for about two weeks and could continue to be slotted as the Tampa Bay Rays' designated hitter in upcoming days as he recovers. Longoria, who is hitting .305 (79 for 259) with 13 home runs and 39 RBI this season, was placed in the Rays' lineup as the designated hitter for the second consecutive day Friday before a game against the Kansas City Royals at Tropicana Field. He went 1 for 3 and struck out once as a DH in the Royals' victory Thursday. Longoria, who has made other appearances in the DH role in rest situations this season, said he hopes to be recovered by the start of the Rays' three-game series with the Boston Red Sox next Tuesday at Fenway Park. He was seen taking ground balls at third base during the Rays' batting practice session Friday. "I'm kind of getting to the point where I don't feel like I'm doing any good to go out there and run around on it," Longoria said. "I can DH and still be effective. We've had some long games. Some of those games in the Boston series, I was hurting by the end of the game. The hope is that with a couple DH stays, stay off of the turf here and then get the off day going into Boston, that should give it enough time to be fine, and I should be back going out there." Plantar fasciitis, a common basketball injury, includes the inflammation of connective tissue on the sole of a foot. Longoria has no experience with the condition, but he described the sensation as "pretty painful." He said he feels decent at the beginning of the game, but the pain is strong by the end. "We chose to get him off his feet," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "I've never had it, but apparently, it's like a nail at the bottom of your foot."
