It had been 19 months since Jeff Suppan had last appeared in a major league game. But, the former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher, whose big contract and poor performance led to his eventual release from the team in June 2010, re-emerged from the minors as a member of the San Diego Padres to face his former team on Wednesday. And, in a game that would have ranked as one of Suppan's best performances had it come during his four years in Milwaukee, he pitched five scoreless innings against the Brewers as the Padres shut out Milwaukee, 5-0. Losing the three-game series in San Diego, the Brewers are now 11-14 this season."Yeah, I'm surprised," manager Ron Roenicke said on FOX Sports Wisconsin after the game when asked how his team has gone two consecutive games without scoring a run. "I think we ought to be scoring runs off everybody. We need to get it going. It's not fun to watch."During Suppan's recent stretch in the minors, he had given up nine runs and 17 hits in less than seven innings prior to being called up by the Padres. With an ERA that soared to 7.84 in Milwaukee in 2010, Suppan's lack of success probably had Brewers hitters entering the game feeling good about their chances. However, Milwaukee managed only four hits. The Brewers did load the bases in the fourth inning with only one out, but first baseman Travis Ishikawa grounded into an inning-ending double play.Ishikawa's presence in the lineup was a result of the devastating news earlier in the day that Mat Gamel -- the heir to the throne at first base after Prince Fielder signed with Detroit -- had torn his ACL and would likely miss the remainder of the season.Ishikawa grounded into another double play in the seventh inning, though Roenicke liked that both of those balls were hit hard. With the Brewers reeling a bit emotionally following Gamel's injury, there was another scare in the sixth inning when Ryan Braun had to leave the game. After flying out to left field, Braun slightly hobbled to the dugout and did not return."He's got a tight Achilles' tendon that he felt a little yesterday on a stolen base," Roenicke said.Asked if he was concerned about Braun's injury, Roenicke replied, "I don't think so."Thursday is a much-needed day off for the Brewers, but getting their offense back on track won't be very easy over the weekend. Traveling to San Francisco, the series with the Giants begins with a matchup against former Cy Young winner, Tim Lincecum. The series will conclude with Milwaukee facing Matt Cain, who recently became the highest-paid right-handed pitcher ever.Follow Paul Imig on Twitter.

Suppan Sinks Brewers in Padres 5-0 Victory

When we all heard the word that Jeff Suppan was making the start against the Brewers today most thought this could be a chance for the bats to come alive.  Boy were they wrong as Suppan mastered the Milwaukee lineup in route to a 2nd straight shutout of the Brewers, winning 5-0.  More worriesome than that was the news that Mat Gamel is lost for the season with a torn ACL and our...

Padres place LHP Luebke on DL with strained elbow

The San Diego Padres have placed left-hander Cory Luebke on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left elbow. Luebke, who is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA, said he began to feel soreness in his elbow during his last start, a 5-3 win Friday at San Francisco. To replace him as San Diego's starter on Wednesday night against Milwaukee, the Padres purchased the contract of right...

Padres Insider: Injury updates & hitting streaks

LF Carlos Quentin will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Tucson on Tuesday, although his return to the Padres is still at least a week away. Quentin had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee March 19 to repair the meniscus and remove floating particles. "Running straight ahead is usually not a problem in these injuries," manager Bud Black said after the Padres put...

Padres' Luebke to skip start due to elbow discomfort

LHP Cory Luebke, the San Diego Padres' best pitcher thus far, will skip a start due to tightness and discomfort in his elbow. Luebke, who this spring signed a $12 million/$27.5 million contract extension that commits him to the Padres through 2017, is off to a 3-1 start with a 2.61 ERA through five starts. "It's feeling better already," said Luebke of his...

Padres Issue Statement on Junior Seau

“Everyone in the Padres organization is deeply saddened by the news of Junior Seau’s passing,” said Padres President Tom Garfinkel.  “He was a great San Diegan and an inspiration, not only on the playing field, but in how he positively impacted people's lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Seau family, friends and the Chargers organization during this difficult time.”

Padres sent Frieri to Angels for 2 minor leaguers

The San Diego Padres have sent right-handed reliever Ernesto Frieri to the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Alexi Amarista and right-hander Donn Roach, both minor leaguers. Frieri was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 appearances before Thursday's trade. He was the longest tenured player in the Padres organization, signing as a non-drafted free agent at 17 in January 2003. The native...

Daily Friar 5.2.12

In recent history May has been a pretty decent month for the Padres. Most of the May months in the past few years have given the team a winning reacord. I'm not necessarily that will be the case this season, but they are on the right foot. They won last night in the first game of May, and hope to carry that over into tonight. Cory Luebke is missing his start tonight though, so...

Padres 2, Brewers 0

Pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay belted a two-run homer with one out in the eighth to give the San Diego Padres a 2-0 win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. Kotsay, who played with Milwaukee last year, drove a 1-1 pitch from Francisco Rodriguez to right field. Will Venable was aboard on a single. It was Kotsay's fourth career pinch homer and his first since Aug. 9, 2002...

Daily Friar 5.3.12

San Diego collectively mourned the loss of a sports icon for the city. What Tony Gwynn is to San Diego baseball, Junior Seau was to San Diego football. I am sad that he is gone from the world, but at the same time happy that he isn't battling his own demons anymore. It's sad that he had to go the way he did though. That being said, the Padres gave this city exactly what they...

Daily Friar 5.4.12

The Padres had an off day yesterday, but that didn't meant they stayed quiet. The trade market was all a buzz yesterday as the Padres made a move with the Angels. I won't spoil anything here if you haven't read about it yet, but the article is below on who was moved. Most of the team was busy yesterday as well getting out in the community, which is always a great thing...

The worst pitchers to win a baseball game

The impossible or at least the high baseball unlikely happened on Wednesday evening with 37-year-old vagabond pitcher Jeff Suppan winning his first game since 2010. Someone I follow on Twitter asked who must have felt worse, the Giants losing to Jim Bouton in 1978 or the Brewers falling to Suppan. I say the '78 Giants. It was no great time to be Giant then; Bouton was also playing...

Angels acquire reliever Frieri from Padres

The Los Angeles Angels obtained right-handed pitcher Ernesto Frieri from the San Diego Padres in a trade that brought minor league infielder Alexi Amarista and minor league right-handed pitcher Donn Roach to San Diego, the Angeles announced Thursday. Frieri, 26, is 1-0 with a 2.31 earned run average in 11 appearances for the Padres this season. He has 18 strikeouts in 11 2/3...

Angels acquire Ernesto Frieri, finally get Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow some help

What Jerry Dipoto wants, Jerry Dipoto gets.  As if the Pujols and Wilson signings didn't show us that already, the Angels GM went out and proved it once more by acquiring young, talented power reliever Ernesto Frieri from the San Diego Padres in order to bolster the Angels Bullpen of Perpetual Sorrow. While one reliever isn't going to fix the bullpen, Frieri is a major...
