Former Brewer Suppan stings old squad

It had been 19 months since Jeff Suppan had last appeared in a major league game. But, the former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher, whose big contract and poor performance led to his eventual release from the team in June 2010, re-emerged from the minors as a member of the San Diego Padres to face his former team on Wednesday. And, in a game that would have ranked as one of Suppan's best performances had it come during his four years in Milwaukee, he pitched five scoreless innings against the Brewers as the Padres shut out Milwaukee, 5-0. Losing the three-game series in San Diego, the Brewers are now 11-14 this season."Yeah, I'm surprised," manager Ron Roenicke said on FOX Sports Wisconsin after the game when asked how his team has gone two consecutive games without scoring a run. "I think we ought to be scoring runs off everybody. We need to get it going. It's not fun to watch."During Suppan's recent stretch in the minors, he had given up nine runs and 17 hits in less than seven innings prior to being called up by the Padres.With an ERA that soared to 7.84 in Milwaukee in 2010, Suppan's lack of success probably had Brewers hitters entering the game feeling good about their chances. However, Milwaukee managed only four hits. The Brewers did load the bases in the fourth inning with only one out, but first baseman Travis Ishikawa grounded into an inning-ending double play.Ishikawa's presence in the lineup was a result of the devastating news earlier in the day that Mat Gamel -- the heir to the throne at first base after Prince Fielder signed with Detroit -- had torn his ACL and would likely miss the remainder of the season.Ishikawa grounded into another double play in the seventh inning, though Roenicke liked that both of those balls were hit hard.With the Brewers reeling a bit emotionally following Gamel's injury, there was another scare in the sixth inning when Ryan Braun had to leave the game. After flying out to left field, Braun slightly hobbled to the dugout and did not return."He's got a tight Achilles' tendon that he felt a little yesterday on a stolen base," Roenicke said.Asked if he was concerned about Braun's injury, Roenicke replied, "I don't think so."Thursday is a much-needed day off for the Brewers, but getting their offense back on track won't be very easy over the weekend. Traveling to San Francisco, the series with the Giants begins with a matchup against former Cy Young winner, Tim Lincecum.
