The Houston Astros have claimed Fernando Martinez off waivers.
The Astros are taking a flyer on the former New York Mets top-ranked prospect. To make room for Martinez, the team released right hander Henry Villar.
Martinez was apart of the Buffalo Bison at the Triple-A level for the majority of last season. He had a brief stint with the Mets.
He had a .260 batting average with eight home runs and 30 RBI’s in 63 games at Buffalo. He only played in 11 games with the Mets.
He one home run last season with the Mets came at Minute Maid Park on May 13th. The home run was off of pitcher Bud Norris.
He also appeared in 36 games with the Mets in 2009 and 2012.
