Seems like the Phillies enjoy going back to the well these days.

Yesterday we linked to stories about former Phillies Juan Samuel and Ryne Sandberg possibly making returns to the organization, and today we have news about another former Phillie and middle infielder, Mickey Morandini, possibly doing the same.

From Jim Salisbury

People with knowledge of Morandini’s thinking say he is not only ready to work in professional baseball again, but has spoken with Phillies officials about managing in the organization’s minor-league system in 2011.

The Phils have multiple minor-league managerial openings, including Triple A and Double A. It’s possible that the organization could shift some personnel to create openings at lower classifications. Morandini, 44, has spent the last several years coaching high-school baseball in Indiana. If he joins the Phillies’ minor-league staff, he could spend a year managing at the Single A level.

I think it’s cool when a team takes care of their own and brings back former players as coaches instead of hiring from elsewhere, especially when it’s a guy as beloved as Morandini, who was David Eckstein before David Eckstein was David Eckstein. Seriously, look at his stats from 1993 and tell me how he was able to hit second for most of the season for the N.L. Champs. It’s crazy!

I’ve always liked Mickey and it’d be great to have him back in the organization, partially because he was a second baseman (my position as a youth), but mostly because we have more reasons to say his name like the late Harry Kalas – “Mick-ey Mor-an-dee-nee!”
