Bronx Bombers Report:
Francisco Cervelli, the New York Yankees’ backup catcher is fully recovered from the broken foot he suffered in Spring Training and will resume his role as the team’s second catcher. Cervelli has never been a guy that I bent over backwards for, but he will be an offensive upgrade over Gustavo Molina. Cervelli’s defense may be a notch behind Molina’s (I’ll have to check him out once he plays), but overall his presence presents the New York Yankees with a slight upgrade. Russell Martin is still a guy that will play more than most catchers so Cervelli doesn’t figure to get too much time behind the dish. Limited PT should allow for Cervelli’s enthusiasm, non-stop chatter and frequent fist pumping to maintain its charm over the course of a full season.
Honestly, I’m hoping that Cervelli makes a nice impression in his limited playing time and some team falls in love with him at the trade deadline and asks for him as a key secondary piece...
