The Toronto Blue Jays have some of the best bloggers on the Web and this writer loves checking them out. Writers like Tao of Stieb, Navin Vaswani and others provide priceless entertainment. And after reading them religiously for the past season, when it was announced that the Mets had signed Frank Francisco, the Fan's first reaction was to scoff. After all, "Fat Frankie" as he was called north of the border was often the cause of derision and scorn. But if this observer has learned one lesson over the years, it's, "check your facts." Francisco isn't half as bad as perceived. When looking at a deal, the first thing this writer does is check Fangraphs' valuation of a player over the last several seasons. Judging by that, the Mets overpaid Francisco. According to the reports, Francisco is due to receive $12 million over the next two seasons or an average of $6 million per. But WAR might not be the best way to value closers. You also have to look at t...

Where is there room on the 40 man
Now that the Mets have made Frank Francisco officially their closer for the next two years, the roster is once again at 40. Not only do they have holes to fill on the active roster but this is the time of year when there are some really nice claims to be made do to other club's roster issues. For example; after the Pads netted four players in the Matos trade they had to expose...
Mets Stepping Up Efforts To Trade Wright?
Take this with a grain of salt. Chuck Johhnson of NY Baseball Digest just reported the following:
A number of sources are indicating the Mets are stepping up their attempts to move their only remaining moveable contract, that of David Wright. With Johan Santana once again shut-down and doubtful to be ready for Opening Day and Jason Bay owning a full-no trade clause, Wrightâ...
Mets Unlikely To Make A Major Trade
If there is anything we've learned since the winter meetings, it is that the Mets' front office is willing to discuss a trade for anyone. Jon Niese, Justin Turner, Ike Davis...no one is safe, or so it would seem.Due to the nature of the team's farm system, which is not in a position to immediately assist the big league club, and the seemingly stingy ownership group he...
RHP Francisco inks 2-year deal with Mets (AP)
Reliever Frank Francisco has signed a two-year contract with the New York Mets. The 32-year-old Francisco went 1-4 with 17 saves and a 3.55 ERA in 54 games with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011. The right-hander has appeared in 50 or more games in each of the last five years. He had 25 saves with the Rangers in 2009.
Quick Q&A: w/ BP’s Kevin Goldstein about cutting GCL Mets
The Mets announced Tuesday that they are eliminating their rookie league team in the Class-A Gulf Coast League, though they will continue to operate Kingsport.
Kevin Goldstein writes about every team’s farm system for Baseball Prospectus, ESPN and Sirius/XM Radio.
Here is a quick Q&A between Goldstein and MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone, in response to the news about...
Coincidence of Opposites: Are the Mets headed in the right direction?
Some people think with certainty that the Mets are headed in the right direction, and others think with certainty that they are not headed in the right direction.
For me, however, the answer is a bit more complicated. I’m torn; they are headed in the right direction, but also the wrong direction. What I mean is that while the team is now better run from a baseball perspective...
Audio: Matt and Rob talk Mets, Survivor and Social Media
Rob Cesternino was a contestant on Survivor: Amazon in 2003 and Survivor: All Stars. He’s also a very passionate Mets fan.
Last week, I talked with him on his latest podcast, during which we discuss the Mets, their off season and what’s next, as well as our thoughts on Survivor (of which I am still a big fan), the similarities between Jose Reyes and Ozzy, and if Bobby...
Mets Interested In Catcher Luis Martinez
According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are interested in catcher Luis Martinez, who was designated for assignment by the Padres this past weekend.
The 26-year-old right-handed hitting backstop batted .203/.309/.305 with one home run and 10 RBI over 68 plate appearances in his rookie season with the Padres.
With Triple-A Tucson this season, Martinez batted .313 with...
Mets interested in Luis Martinez
I mentioned him earlier today in the roster post and according to the NY Post the Mets are interested in catcher Luis Martinez. The 26 y/o catcher looked to be the back-up catcher in San Diego until he got caught in a roster crunch after the Latos trade. He has two options left and five years of control. While he only hit .203 in 22 games in his first exposure to the majors last...
The First Cut Is The Deepest
Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal writes today, that while the Mets have operated like a typical big-market team for years, their payroll is shrinking to a degree that is almost unprecedented within the industry, at least in this millennium.
General manager Sandy Alderson said recently that he expects the payroll for 2012 to come in at around $100 million and could even be slightly...
Latest On Carlos Beltran
Carlos Beltran is one of the top free agents remaining (#4 among unsigned free agents on MLBTR's top 50 list). He hit .300/.385/.525 with 22 homers for the Mets and Giants this past season and won't cost a draft pick, so teams looking for a capable outfield bat have taken note. The 34-year-old switch-hitter won't come cheap, however. Here's the latest on Beltran...
When Will It Be Our Time?
I was born on January 10th, 1988. Just about 14 months or so after the Mets won the World Series and to this date, the last one won by the team since then.
I became a Mets fan in 1999 and havent looked back, taking the good and the bad, hoping the team can finally win a world championship.
I have never seen one of my teams win a championship, ever. I dont count the 1994 Rangers,...
