Yasiel Puig, who had been considered the favorite entering the contest, finished second meaning he will have to wait to make the team as an injury replacement.
A lot of debate has been made about whether or not Puig should be invited to the All-Star Game but in this instance fans voted against him by electing the 23-year-old Freeman.
Freeman set a record with 19.7 million votes, while Puig was second both elipsing the previous record for final votes recorded by Shane Victorino in 2009.
“It’s unbelievable,” Freeman said of the news. “I’m kind of speechless. I wouldn’t be here without the fans and I just saw that it’s 19.7 million votes. It’s incredible and it’s just a dream come true.”
For the season Freeman is hitting .307/.388/.858 with 9 home runs and 56 RBI in 78 games.
Just for the sake of comparison Puig is hitting .394/.428/.634 with 8 home runs and 19 RBI in 35 games for the Dodgers.
