Is it the end of the road for Burrell? (PHOTO AP)

–Yesterday, we heard from Jon Heyman of SI.com that the Phillies and Ryan Madson had agreed to a four year, $44 million deal with a fifth-year option. All that was left was for David Montgomery to OK it. Well, that no longer seems to be the case.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com says he has spoken to Ruben Amaro Jr. who calls the claim “unequivocally false.” Amaro claims there was never a deal in place between the two sides.

–That said, Jonathan Papelbon enters the picture if Ryan Madson exits it. That’s what Heyman says, referring to the Phillies brass who like Papelbon if the Madson deal falls through. That would be an interesting scenario, as I believe they would both cost roughly the same amount of money.

Papelbon and Madson are just a few months apart and both have had success as a closer, although Papelbon’s is much longer as a ninth-inning guy.

–Pat Burrell tells the AP his career is pretty much over. “I have not decided yet, but I don’t think I can play anymore,” Burrell said. “It hurts me to say that.” The 35-year old former Phillie played in only 92 games this past season and has battled injury issues for much of his career.

It always looked painful watching Burrell run in the outfield and it seems like yesterday he was roaming around in left field for the 2008 champion Phillies.
