Oswaldo Arcia, OF, Twins (High-A Fort Myers): 4-for-4, HR (5), R, RBI. Arcia was seen as a potential breakout candidate in 2011, but after a great start to the season, elbow surgery delayed things. That left him far too off the radar, as the 21-year-old Venezuelan is off to another great start, going 10-for-15 in his last four games to lift his season averages to .314/.365/.512. With a plus hit tool, the potential for plus power and more than enough arm for right field, Arcia is the kind of offensive prospect the Twins desperately need, and a healthy, productive season could move him into Top 100 territory. Others Of Note: Jorge Bonifacio, OF, Royals (Low-A Kane County): 3-for-5, 2B, HR (4), 2 R, 4 RBI. Third straight multi-hit game and home runs in back-to-back ones; .319/.378/.462 on the season. Archie Bradley, RHP, Diamondbacks (Low-A South Bend): 4.1 IP, 6 H, 9 R (8 ER), 2 BB, K. Has hit disturbing rough spot; 14.1 IP, 16 H, 16 R, 9 BB, 8 K in last three strarts. ...

Twins' Liriano: 'This is a new start for me'

MINNEAPOLIS With the way he was pitching early on, Francisco Liriano didn't have many reasons to smile this year. But there was no mistaking the grin on his face after he helped the Minnesota Twins sweep the Oakland Athletics with a 4-0 victory Wednesday. It was Liriano's first start since May 7. Since then, the Twins left-hander was demoted to the bullpen for three weeks...

Gardy: If Pavano's not healthy, he won't play

For a pitcher who prides himself on being an innings-eater, Twins starter Carl Pavano's last two outings have been two steps backward, a disappointing trend for the 36-year-old right-hander. Pavano was pulled from Friday's game in Cleveland after just 3-23 innings, one start after lasing only 4-13 innings against Detroit. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits Friday...

Liriano returns to rotation, Twins aim for sweep

With the worst starting rotation ERA in baseball, the Minnesota Twins are turning back to Francisco Liriano - not that he has exactly earned another chance. Liriano will make his first start since May 7 on Wednesday when the Twins try for a three-game home sweep of the woeful Oakland Athletics, who have lost seven straight. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire announced Saturday that...

Twins starting to show flashes of improvement

Here's a sentence you haven't heard lately: The Twins are on a roll. They swept the Oakland A's in a three-game series. And Francisco Liriano is coming off what, for him, was a brilliant performance. Liriano threw six shutout innings and struck out nine in the 4-0 Wednesday win that completed the sweep.Never mind that the A's are in a slump and have had the worst batting...

Liriano makes stellar return to Twins' rotation

The Minnesota Twins have been trying to be patient with Francisco Liriano, giving him a chance to work out his struggles in the bullpen in hopes that he would regain enough confidence to overcome his command problems and get back in the rotation. Liriano proved Wednesday afternoon why the Twins have been willing to give him so much rope. In six shutout innings during a 4-0 win...

Twins MLB Draft Preview

With the MLB Draft coming next week, and TRE's post about the NBA draft spurring me on (it's the one right below this one, genius) I figured we might as well take a look at the MLB draft, particularly since the Twins are so involved.  Involved as in they have the #2, #32 (thanks Cuddy), the #42 (thanks Kubes), and the #63.  So this is pretty much a really great time to...

Phil Dumatrait to retire

No Ace In The Hole

The Minnesota Twins are going into Cleveland tonight to take on the second place Indians in the start of a three game series.  The veteran Carl Pavano (2-4, 5.46) will take the hill facing Derek Lowe (6-3, 3.25) at 6:05 CT.  Carl Pavavo The expectations for the Twins pitching staff going into this season weren't very high to begin with, but they were counting on...

Twins' Willingham, Liriano send A's to 8th straight loss

By Dan MyersSpecial to SportsXchangeMINNEAPOLIS -- Playing against his former team, Minnesota Twins left fielder Josh Willingham did it again Wednesday. Less than 24 hours after clubbing a walk-off, three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Willingham blasted another homer Wednesday to lead the Twins to a 4-0 win over the Oakland A's. The victory...

Twins 4, Athletics 0

Francisco Liriano's return to the Minnesota rotation was a rousing success, with six shutout innings by the vexing left-hander Wednesday to lead the Twins to a 4-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics, their eighth straight loss. Liriano (1-5) retired the last 11 batters he faced and struck out nine, the most this season by any Twins pitcher. He allowed only two walks with a double...

Willingham Goes Yard!

Sometimes, all it takes is one.  The Oakland A's (22-28) went into the 9th up by 2 runs against a the Minnesota Twins (17-32) and were hoping to finally end their 6 game losing streak.  That was until Josh Willingham stepped up to the dish with 2 on and 2 out and bashed a 3 run job over the fence to win the game -- walk off style.  The Twins celebrated by giving him a Gatorade...

Get Out The Brooms!

The Twins (18-32) successfully completed the series sweep today against the bumbling, stumbling A's (22-29) in a 4-0 victory.  Frankie Liriano even recorded his first win of the season today going 6 shutout innings and striking out 9 in the process looking very similar to the old Liriano who commanded three pitches at all times. Of course....this was against the Oakland...

Twins’ acquire Matt Capps for Wilson Ramos in review

Two seasons ago, Joe Nathan went down in Spring Training and the Twins were forced to find a closer from within their organization. They chose Jon Rauch, and from opening day until July 30, Rauch was 21/25 on save attempts with a 3.05 ERA. Now, Rauch didn’t fit the closer mold, as he no longer [...]
