Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Pirates (61-41) at Marlins (39-63)
1:10 PM–Marlins Park, Miami
The Bucs look for a series win this afternoon in Miami as they finish up their road trip.
Tony Sanchez is in Miami, but hasn’t been activated yet. Russell Martin is in the lineup today despite not being 100%, and no decision has been made on Michael McKenry yet. The Bucs have 24 hours to decide what they will do with Sanchez.
Andrew McCutchen is getting a scheduled day off today.
Gerrit Cole (5-3, 3.51) vs. Jose Fernandez (6-5, 2.74)
Cole looked great in his first post-ASB start and will look to make it two good ones in a row this afternoon against a bad Marlins club. Gerrit will be the only Bucco starter that won’t pitch in the upcoming St. Louis series, but he can still help the Bucs out next week by going deep today and keeping the bullpen fresh.
Fernandez is one of the best pitchers in the league, as a rookie. He was on the All Star team and is the co-center...

Michael McKenry hurt his left knee last night sliding into second base. McKenry got a late slide and hit his knee on the bag during the slide, leading to his knee getting “stuck” as he described it. There was no update on his status this morning, although...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed right fielder Travis Snider on the 15-day disabled list with discomfort in his big toe.
Snider is batting .219 with 3 home runs and 23 RBIs for the Pirates.
With his offensive struggles much of this season, Snider has been a disappoint since coming over in a trade last year. The injury could persuade the Pirates to shop for a right fielder at...
Well, that’s pretty gross. Actually, the sight of Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole going full bore while mining for nose gold as he sits in the dugout during what likely was Sunday’s game against the Miami Marlins is gross enough if that’s all that happened, but what he does with what he extracts from his [...]The post Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole caught picking his nose...
After giving up three earned runs through seven innings in a 3-2 loss to the Marlins on Sunday night, Pirates starting pitcher treated himself to a booger.
With the pick, the examination and the sly entry to his mouth, he looks pretty experienced.
It would seem that Pirates rookie Gerrit Cole has a lot to learn in his career as a pro baseball player. Lesson number one: Don’t pick your nose and eat your boogers when you’re the only guy in the dugout and there’s a camera pointed at you.
You nasty, Gerrit Cole…you nasty.

Russell Martin left Friday night's 2-0 loss to the Marlins with what Pirates manager Clint Hurdle described as a "hitch" in the catcher's left knee. Martin was banged up while tagging Jeff Mathis on a collision at home plate during the second inning.
As expected, Russell Martin is out of the #Pirates lineup tonight. He suffered what he described as a minor knee...
The Pirates lost the game and the series on Sunday as Jose Fernandez out-dueled Gerrit Cole in a battle of terrific young pitchers.
Cole had an impressive outing. He gave the Bucs seven innings, allowed just four hits and two walks, and struck out a career-high eight. He looked at ease for the most part and wasn’t challenged much, but still ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard...
Gerrit Cole and Jose Fernandez will face off this afternoon in Miami, in what has to be one of the more exciting matchups between young pitchers in 2013. Fernandez is just 20 years old and was the 14th pick in 2011 draft that Cole went #1 overall in. He's been excellent for the Marlins this year, striking out 111 batters in 111 2/3 innings. He's also unintentionally walked...

Gerrit Cole vs Jose Fernandez. That was the matchup today. One was a first overall pick in the 2011 draft. The other was taken 13 picks later. Both have progressed to the point where they look like they could be future number one starters. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Fernandez looks like he...

MIAMI Jose Fernandez appeared on the verge of his first major-league career complete game.
Sure, the Miami Marlins had been very protective of their All-Star with the golden arm, saying the rookie's season would end after he throws 150-170 innings.
But on Sunday, Fernandez had struck out 13 Pirates through eight innings 13 Ks!
Plus, Pittsburgh had managed just five hits and...
The Pirates bounced back with a productive game at the plate on Saturday night as they earned a 7-4 win over the Marlins, evening this weekend’s series. They did it with some things we aren’t used to seeing: offense from Michael McKenry and lots of base hits with RISP.
McKenry had a fantastic game and collected four hits, a career high. The Fort has looked better lately and did...
