The strange thing about big late-inning comebacks is that they've started before you ever fully realize what's going on. When Mike McKenry sent a Mat Latos pitch into the Reds' bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Pirates' win expectancy barely ticked up at all, going from 2.5% to 4.9%. I mostly filed it away as something that I was happy to see; remember that when the Pirates' signed Russell Martin, by biggest qualm wasn't that Martin wouldn't be worth the money that the Pirates were paying him, but that he wouldn't be worth that much more than McKenry. There was no way to know this winter how The Fort's power would translate to a new season, so seeing his first homer of the year was just one of those things I had on the radar. The same thing went for Starling Marte's single later in the inning; I was just happy to see his hitting streak continue. After Marte's single, Travis Snider stood in the batter's box and I thou...

Alex Presley joins the team

The #Pirates option RHP Phil Irwin to AAA Indianapolis and recall OF Alex Presley. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 15, 2013 As expected, the Pirates sent Phil Irwin back to Triple-A after yesterday’s spot start. I would not be surprised to see him back (and would still prefer him over Jonathan Sanchez, probably), but Irwin could probably benefit from some more time in the...

First Pitch: What Really Led to the Comeback by the Pirates

So if you were on Twitter during the game, you saw this. If not, here’s the story of what really led to the Pirates comeback today. James Santelli has been working on a Garrett Jones article this week, which took a lot of research and time to put together. You can check it out here: Analysis: Teams Should Shift Their Infield More Against Garrett Jones. I didn’t want to upload...

Video: Watch Joey Votto go yard

Your browser does not support iframes. Joey Votto did something on Sunday in which he hadn't done since June 24, 2012: he hit a home run. The long drought came to an end in the ninth inning as Votto belted a bomb well over the center field wall at PNC Park. As you can see, it was a no doubter. Votto missed nearly two months during the middle of last season as he recovered...

Cardinals 10, Pirates 6

This one started and ended with James McDonald. What an absolutely horrible performance. The Cardinals obliterated J-Mac, who looked absolutely helpless out on the mound against a team he dominated last season. The Pirates ended up having a pretty decent day at the plate but it didn’t matter. Thanks to some bad St. Louis baserunning and a couple hard-hit balls right at people,...

Pirates Complete a Huge Comeback Victory Against the Reds

There were many moments in Pittsburgh’s improbable come-from-behind 10-7 win against Cincinnati on Sunday that could be pointed to as turning points. Andrew McCutchen’s hit in the seventh inning kept momentum on the Pirates’ side after a video review went against them. While we won’t comment specifically on security procedures at...

Sizing Up Tony Cingrani

The Reds received a scare when Johnny Cueto was placed on the disabled list with a strained lat muscle. As he returned to Cincinnati for further testing yesterday, the minor leagues’ hottest pitcher took the mound in Louisville awaiting to hear whether he would replace Cincinnati’s ace. In three Triple-A starts, Tony Cingrani destroyed the International League: he struck out...

Game 11 Preview: Pirates vs. Reds

Reds (5-5) at Pirates (4-6) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: MLB Network* The Bucs look to build off last night’s exciting win and take the series tonight against the hated Redlegs.  These teams meet a total of 19 times over the course of the year, but an early series win would be big for the Bucs’ confidence. They’ve won 3 of the last 4 and it would be great...

Cincinnati Reds Place Johnny Cueto On 15-Day Disabled List

Today the Cincinnati Reds had to place starting pitcher Johnny Cueto on the 15-day disabled list. The injury is being identified as a lat strain and has been known to sideline pitchers for more than a month. He injured himself against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. Rank Relief: Reds make it back to back apperances

Broxton barely looks as Starling Marte jacks a homerun to take the lead for good. Yesterday we gave Dusty Baker a hard time for going to JJ Hoover constantly despite his plus 6 ERA.  Well apparently we can no longer blame him as seemingly everyone in their bullpen is pitching awful.  Frankly, this should be a team award for giving up 10 runs to the Pirates in the 7th and 8th...

Cardinals-Pirates Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates just completed a sweep over a rival for the first time in three years. Now they'll try to end an even longer sweep drought against another NL Central foe. The Pittsburgh Pirates continue their 10-game homestand as they open a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. The Pirates rallied from a 5-0, seventh-inning deficit to beat Cincinnati...

Lee Sharp, Offense Struggles in 4-2 Loss to Reds

We had ourselves a pitcher's duel tonight on this Jackie Robinson Day in Cincinnati between Cliff Lee and Bronson Arroyo. (.Gif file courtesy of Eliot on Twitter) Lee, backed by some stellar offense in center field (and possibly the best play of the year), was dominating the Reds tonight. The...
