This double-header was a weird roller coaster for two games that didn't involve a whole lot of run scoring. The first game was exciting when it looked like James McDonald was going to make a run at a no-hitter, but terrifying in the thought that the no-hitter might not be enough to win (weirdly enough, home plate ump Tom Hallion called the Francisco Cordova/Ricardo Rincon no-hitter). Then the Rockies scored and Pedro Alvarez homered and Chris Resop gave up another run and the Pirates lost. In Game 2, Charlie Morton cruised on the mound almost as well as McDonald did, but it took the Pirate five innings to score at all. When they did, they tossed five runs on the board and then didn't score again while Morton and the bullpen had to hold the lead. The first half of the double header was really tough to take. The Pirates out-hit the Rockies 9-3 and James McDonald absolutely cruised with one hit, eight strikeouts, and three walks in seven innings, but it just wasn't enough. ...

Jhoulys Chacin still looking to take the next step for Colorado Rockies
Chacin has one more hurdle to jump. The Colorado Rockies played two games on Wednesday. In all, they scored three runs on eight hits. Usually, numbers like that would result in two losses. Alvarez starting to provide power for Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates have waited patiently for nearly two years for third baseman Pedro Alvarez to showcase all the tools that made him the second overall pick of the 2008 draft.
Their patience might finally be paying off. Following a horrific start, Alvarez's bat is showing signs of life. He hit homers in both games of a doubleheader split with Colorado on Wednesday to raise...
Recap 4/25 | Rockies 2 Pirates 1
Game one of the double header between the Rockies and Pirates finished with Colorado picking up a 2-1 victory. The story of this game was James McDonald's ability to take a no hitter into the seventh inning. Due to the Pirates being able to push only one run across, JMac picked up a no decision while only allowing one hit over seven innings. He allowed one run and struck out...
Fans cant beat Moyers 78-mph heater
Colorado Rockies pitcher Jamie Moyer made headlines last week when, at 49 years old, he became the oldest pitcher to win a major league game. Also of note in his start against the San Diego Padres was that Moyer's fastball topped out at 78 mph.
The Fort Myers Miracle, the Class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, took note of both those facts and decided to have a little fun...

Game 16: Pirates 5 Rockies 4
Let's start with this: this post will not be about bunting. I have an alarming amount of things to say about bunting and I'll probably say them several times in the near future. The bunting in this game made me angry, but I want to save most of these thoughts for later so that I can be more coherent and (hopefully) eloquent about it. For tonight, the Pirates had one of their...
Is Bedard this year’s Maholm?
Remember last year how Paul Maholm posted a career-best 3.66 ERA while starting 26 games for the imploding Pirates? If you do, then you probably also remember that even though he was on a career-setting pace stat-wise before he got hurt, his record ended up at a miserable 6-14.
That’s because the offense provided him an average of 2.88 runs of support and in Maholm’s 26...
Rodriguez Getting Back To Basics
BINGHAMTON, NY - Second baseman Josh Rodriguez has been in the minor leagues for over six seasons, but he has every intention of moving forward. After a brief seven-game stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, the Houston native is in his first season with the Binghamton Mets.
Doubleheader!
After the Pirates exciting win last night, they close out this series with the Rockies and this homestand with a double-header this afternoon. It's an old school doubleheader; it's starting at 12:35 and the second game will start a half hour or so after the first. One ticket, two games. Kind of makes me wish that back in Pittsburgh with a physics class to skip or something...
