41-32, 1st place, 3 games up on Cleveland, winning streak at 1. Now it’s time for Justin Verlander (vs. Doubront) and the most satisfying series win of the season. Some bench guys are going to get starts today. Count on it, and don’t complain about it. The bench has been good. Tub is Love, and Bench is Good. Considering Miggy’s stats in JV starts, it might be a good time to give him a day off. But I wouldn’t count on it, and that I would complain about. If we update this: OFFENSIVE WPA/RE24 HEROES (bold = win) + OPPONENT GAME 68 JACKSON (BAL)  GAME 69 JACKSON GAME 70 TUIASOSOPO GAME 71 PERALTA (BOS)  GAME 72 CABRERA And then update this: OFFENSIVE WPA/RE24 TURDS (bold = loss) + OPPONENT GAME 68 PENA (BAL) GAME 69 CABRERA  GAME 70 JACKSON  GAME 71 CABRERA, MARTINEZ (BOS) GAME 72 FIELDER  And then tote up all the “best in wins” and “worst in losses,” we might come up with something like this: OFFENSIVE W-L TUIASOSOPO 4-0 KELLY 3-0 SANTIAGO 1-0 CABRERA 13-3 JACKSON 4-2 PERALTA 3-2 FIELDER 9-7 AVILA 3-3 PENA 0-0 DIRKS 3-5 MARTINEZ 4-8 HUNTER 1-2 GARCIA 1-2 INFANTE 2-5 If we instead looked at “best in losses” and “worst in wins,” we’d get a look into where team results mask the individual contribution: THE CONTRARIANS W-L FISTER 1-0 CABRERA 10-3 TUIASOSOPO 4-2 KELLY 2-1 FIELDER 9-5 PERALTA 3-3 PENA 3-3 JACKSON 2-3 INFANTE 2-4 HUNTER 3-7 AVILA 2-5 GARCIA 1-3 SANTIAGO 0-1 DIRKS 0-6 MARTINEZ 0-6 Much of all that won’t surprise you, but some of it should. For instance: Infante, Hunter, Garcia… all overrated offensively. If JV is ordinary today, let us hope for more of the extraordinary from the Comerica Strong bats.

Valverde designated for assignment

The Detroit Tigers have designated reliever Jose Valverde for assignment, less than two months after bringing the veteran right-hander back to the major leagues for another chance to be the team's closer. Valverde went 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA, converting nine saves in 12 chances. The Tigers will likely use Joaquin Benoit in most save situations for the time being. Detroit has 10...

Two Miguel Cabreras?

DETROIT - Chase Salazar got to live out a childhood dream for many people Friday when he put on a Detroit Tigers No. 24 uniform and played the body double for slugger Miguel Cabrera during a commercial shoot for FOX Sports at Comerica Park. While other extras told him they had spent six hours trying to perfect Cabrera's swing in hopes of being selected, Salazar got the part...

Martinez rebounds with grand slam against Red Sox

DETROIT With one swing of the bat in the first inning, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez surpassed his RBI total from the last 13 games. Martinez hit a grand slam into a stiff wind off Boston Red Sox starter Allen Webster that landed in the first row of the right field seats. Tigers third baseman and major league RBI leader Miguel Cabrera, who had walked on four...

Red Sox 10, Tigers 6

Shane Victorino homered and hit three singles, driving in five runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 10-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer for Detroit, which nearly rallied from a 6-1 deficit but couldn't come through against the Boston bullpen. Daniel Nava & the catch - what's the rule?

Jim Monaghan Contributing writer You know the circumstantces by now - bottom of the eighth inning in a 4-4 game. Daniel Nava was now in right field heading back toward the fence on a fly ball by Avisail Garcia. Nava appeared...

Buchholz Out, Dempster & Lackey Face Rockies

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)Clay Buchholz will miss yet another start (previously scheduled for Tuesday) with continued neck issues. In fact, Buchholz didn't even take part in a planned bullpen session in Detroit on Saturday. Ryan Dempster will start in his place on Tuesday, while John Lackey will pitch on Wednesday against the Rockies. The Red Sox have been all "National Security...

Jon Lester ‘Still a Work in Progress,’ But Red Sox’ Offense Bails Out Southpaw With Big Game

Jon Lester should buy the Red Sox’ offense a round. Lester, who entered Friday’s game winless in his last six starts, had another tough night on the mound, yet he earned his first victory since May 15 because Boston’s bats were relentless. The Red Sox banged out 17 hits en route to a 10-6 victory over the Tigers. “We did a number of things tonight,” manager John Farrell...

Watch: Routine fly ball ends up costing the Red Sox the game.

credit bostonglobe.com How hard is it to catch a routine fly ball at the Major League level? The first thing you need to do a track the ball and get underneath it. Wait until the ball comes down and catch it, preferably with two hands and squeeze the glove. Seems easy enough, and if you are at the big league level it should be routine. Well, not in the case of Boston Red Sox right...

Felix Doubront Wins Amica Pitcher of the Week Honors for Eight-Inning, Three-Hit Performance

Prior to Tuesday’s start, Felix Doubront had never pitched into the eighth inning. He made it all the way through the eighth against the Rays in his latest start, yet didn’t earn the win for his efforts. Doubront struck out six in his best start of the year, allowing three hits and zero walks in eight shutout innings. He lowered his ERA from 4.91 to 4.38 in the impressive outing...

Jose Iglesias Gets Start In Place of Will Middlebrooks, Jon Lester Looks to Get Back in Win Column

Through mid-May, Jon Lester was one of best pitchers in the majors. More than a month later, he is getting desperate for a win. The lefty started off 6-0 with a 2.72 ERA, but is 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA in his previous six starts. Lester will look to end his dry spell and earn his first career win against the Detroit Tigers on Friday. In his five career starts against the Tigers, he...

Blown Ump's Call Results In Red Sox Loss, 7-5

(AP Photo/Duane Burleson)If Bud Selig needs any more evidence of the need for expanded instant replay, today's game is Exhibit A. Daniel Nava clearly made a legal catch (losing the ball on the transfer) that was ruled a drop by the entire inept umpiring crew. John Farrell legitimately argued the call and got his first ejection as Red Sox manager. The blown call led to a series...

Andrew Miller Struggles in Reliever Role, Shoulders Weight of Team Loss (Video)

The Red Sox lost a tough one on Sunday after blowing a lead in the seventh. Manager John Farrell was ejected after arguing a questionable call by the umpires, and the Detroit Tigers capitalized on their momentum. Andrew Miller was called out to pitch in the seventh inning after Andrew Bailey pitched just 1/3 of an inning, but the move didn’t turn out as positively as the Sox might...

Boston will have a chance to split the series as Detroit won Games...
