Pirates (13-9) at Cardinals (13-8)
8:15 PM–Busch Stadium, St. Louis
The Bucs take on the Cards this weekend in their first divisional road series of the year. St. Louis has been playing very well and leads the Central by a half-game. The winner of tonight’s contest will hold first place. Yes, it’s early, but I like when the Pirates are in first place.
Jonathan Sanchez (0-2, 11.12) vs. Lance Lynn (3-0, 3.68)
Sanchez made it through just three innings in his last start and allowed two runs…and his ERA still went down. He’s been awful, but the good news is that this could be his final start as a Buc. At most, he’ll make just one more after this – barring a setback from Francisco Liriano (who pitched very well in a rehab game at AAA last night) or an injury to someone else. Sanchez gave up two runs in two innings against the Cards before the middle game of last week’s series between these teams was rained out.
Lynn is off to a solid start for the second straight season. He’s coing off a seven shutout innings against the Phillies – and allowed just one hit in that game. He got a victory over the Pirates in the series last week but did not pitch all that well – he was staked to a giant lead when James McDonald imploded and the Cards won 10-6.
