New York Yankees 10 — Kansas City Royals 4

Yankees offense appeared in grand style in a 10-4 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Robinson Cano’s grand slam highlighted a 6-run 3rd inning. After six consecutive games where the Yankees could not put up more than 3 runs, the Yankees offense finally came alive today. Soon after Cano’s grand slam, Nick Swisher returned to the lineup and hit a solo home run deep into right field. In this inning, Curtis Granderson also hit a run-scoring single for his 1,000th career hit. With the lead solidly built, Alex Rodriguez added to it in the 8th inning with a 3-run home run, his 634th for his career.

Phil Hughes had plenty of cushion to work with in his 6.2 innings but was quite effective. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits with 7 strikeouts. This was likely his best start of the season as he appears to be building on his previous good start. Hughes also made efficient use of his pitches as he got deeper into the game and exited with 115 pitches. By comparison, in his poor starts, he would have used about the same number of pitches in half of the innings of work.

Win – Phil Hughes (2-4)

Loss – Luke Hochevar (2-3)
