Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer After splitting the first two games, the Boston Red Sox (45-31) and Detroit Tigers (40-32) tangle in tonight’s Game 3 from Comerica Park. The Sox offense exploded for 10 runs, led by right fielder Shane Victorino, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs. Boston’s batters must have thought the same as Red Sox Nation: No lead is safe. Rookie Allen Webster gets a spot start for Clay Buchholz, who is on the DL for another few more days. Webster had an impressive MLB debut, but struggled in his second start earlier this season before being sent back to Pawtucket. For Boston, he is 0-1 with an 11.74 ERA. Here is tonight’s Red Sox lineup (first pitch – 7:15 pm EDT): 1. Ellsbury, CF 2. Victorino, RF 3. Pedroia, 2B 4. Ortiz, DH 5. Carp, 1B 6. Nava, LF 7. Saltalamacchia, C 8. Drew, SS 9. Iglesias, 3B Webster, P Detroit’s Max Scherzer, one of only five 10-game winners and the only pitcher at 10-0, will face the Red Sox tonight. He has a 3.08 ERA ...

Daniel Nava & the catch - what's the rule?

Jim Monaghan Contributing writer You know the circumstantces by now - bottom of the eighth inning in a 4-4 game. Shane Victorino had come out of the game with what Red Sox manager John Farrell would describe as "general soreness...general tightness." Daniel Nava was now in right field heading back toward the fence on a fly ball by Avisail Garcia. Nava appeared...

Red Sox 10, Tigers 6

Shane Victorino homered and hit three singles, driving in five runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 10-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer for Detroit, which nearly rallied from a 6-1 deficit but couldn't come through against the Boston bullpen. Jon Lester (7-4) allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings, but he won for the...

Valverde designated for assignment

The Detroit Tigers have designated reliever Jose Valverde for assignment, less than two months after bringing the veteran right-hander back to the major leagues for another chance to be the team's closer. Valverde went 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA, converting nine saves in 12 chances. The Tigers will likely use Joaquin Benoit in most save situations for the time being. Detroit has 10...

Jon Lester ‘Still a Work in Progress,’ But Red Sox’ Offense Bails Out Southpaw With Big Game

Jon Lester should buy the Red Sox’ offense a round. Lester, who entered Friday’s game winless in his last six starts, had another tough night on the mound, yet he earned his first victory since May 15 because Boston’s bats were relentless. The Red Sox banged out 17 hits en route to a 10-6 victory over the Tigers. “We did a number of things tonight,” manager John Farrell...

No Way Jose: Detroit Tigers DFA Jose Valverde

He  saved nine games for the Tigers  in 12 opportunities and the opposition has a batting average of .237 against him.In most recent appearance on Wednesday he gave up four runs and five hits in one inning of work.  The...

Watch: Routine fly ball ends up costing the Red Sox the game.

credit bostonglobe.com How hard is it to catch a routine fly ball at the Major League level? The first thing you need to do a track the ball and get underneath it. Wait until the ball comes down and catch it, preferably with two hands and squeeze the glove. Seems easy enough, and if you are at the big league level it should be routine. Well, not in the case of Boston Red Sox right...

Two Miguel Cabreras?

DETROIT - Chase Salazar got to live out a childhood dream for many people Friday when he put on a Detroit Tigers No. 24 uniform and played the body double for slugger Miguel Cabrera during a commercial shoot for FOX Sports at Comerica Park. While other extras told him they had spent six hours trying to perfect Cabrera's swing in hopes of being selected, Salazar got the part...

Martinez rebounds with grand slam against Red Sox

DETROIT With one swing of the bat in the first inning, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez surpassed his RBI total from the last 13 games. Martinez hit a grand slam into a stiff wind off Boston Red Sox starter Allen Webster that landed in the first row of the right field seats. Tigers third baseman and major league RBI leader Miguel Cabrera, who had walked on four...

Felix Doubront Wins Amica Pitcher of the Week Honors for Eight-Inning, Three-Hit Performance

Prior to Tuesday’s start, Felix Doubront had never pitched into the eighth inning. He made it all the way through the eighth against the Rays in his latest start, yet didn’t earn the win for his efforts. Doubront struck out six in his best start of the year, allowing three hits and zero walks in eight shutout innings. He lowered his ERA from 4.91 to 4.38 in the impressive outing...

Jose Iglesias Gets Start In Place of Will Middlebrooks, Jon Lester Looks to Get Back in Win Column

Through mid-May, Jon Lester was one of best pitchers in the majors. More than a month later, he is getting desperate for a win. The lefty started off 6-0 with a 2.72 ERA, but is 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA in his previous six starts. Lester will look to end his dry spell and earn his first career win against the Detroit Tigers on Friday. In his five career starts against the Tigers, he...

Blown Ump's Call Results In Red Sox Loss, 7-5

(AP Photo/Duane Burleson)If Bud Selig needs any more evidence of the need for expanded instant replay, today's game is Exhibit A. Daniel Nava clearly made a legal catch (losing the ball on the transfer) that was ruled a drop by the entire inept umpiring crew. John Farrell legitimately argued the call and got his first ejection as Red Sox manager. The blown call led to a series...

Dr. Andrews to examine Buchholz

Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz is planning to see Dr. James Andrews for a lingering neck strain that's had him on the disabled list since early June. Manager John Farrell made the announcement before Sunday night's game against the New York Yankees. He said the 28-year old Buchholz was expected to be on the field throwing when the team took batting practice, but he was...

Andrew Miller Struggles in Reliever Role, Shoulders Weight of Team Loss (Video)

The Red Sox lost a tough one on Sunday after blowing a lead in the seventh. Manager John Farrell was ejected after arguing a questionable call by the umpires, and the Detroit Tigers capitalized on their momentum. Andrew Miller was called out to pitch in the seventh inning after Andrew Bailey pitched just 1/3 of an inning, but the move didn’t turn out as positively as the Sox might...

Red Sox Report: Farrell Showing Trust In Bench

Mike Carp has been a pleasant surprise to the Red Sox this season. In spring training the battles for the bench roles on the Red Sox went down to the final week of March.  Mike Carp who was acquired from the Mariners in mid March for seemingly nothing had just a short period of time to showcase why he belonged on this team.  For starters he plays first base as well as outfield...

Scherzer is Max-ing his value

During the MLB on FOX telecast last Saturday, my colleague Ken Rosenthal reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers and ace Clayton Kershaw had made progress on a seven-year extension worth at least $180 million. This Saturday's MLB on FOX lineup features another top starter who, like Kershaw, is on track to become a free agent after the 2014 season: Detroit Tigers right-hander Max...
