With the loss the Sox find themselves tied for first place in the American League East.- John Smoltz pitched very well for five innings. He had thrown 75 pitches and allowed just four hits and one run and was looking good. It fell apart in a hurry though as the Rangers slammed four extra base hits in the sixth inning.Terry Francona stuck with Smoltz at least one batter too long and I really feel it was two batters. I would have liked to have seen Delcarmen or Okajima face Murphy and keep the game close. Smoltz is a 41 year old pitcher and while he was pitching well Francona has to keep him on a short lease and in the sixth inning with 91 pitches thrown it was time to make the move.- While the focus will be on Smoltz for this loss the Red Sox need to do something about the offense.
