Pirates (57-39) at Nationals (48-50) 7:05 PM–Nationals Park, Washington MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs are in the nation’s capital this week to take on the Nats, who may be baseball’s most disappointing team. Washington has great starting pitching and some good potential on offense, but so far the team that many pegged as the NL favorite has slumped to a record just under .500 (largely thanks to a current stretch of 8 losses in 10 games). The Nats still may be the biggest challenger to the Pirates or Reds for the second wild card spot, but for now they’ve been passed by the Dodgers and Phillies. Still, with Washington’s solid starting pitching, this is not an easy series on the road, especially the way the Pirates are swinging the bats. That said, it’s not too difficult to imagine a big week for the Bucs against the Nats and Marlins before heading home to face the mighty Cardinals. Tonight’s starters… Charlie Morton (1-2, 3.19) vs. Dan Haren (4-10, 5.61) Morton’s last start was a good one (against the Mets) and for the most part he has been doing a decent job so far this season. He’s got an opportunity to build some momentum with a matchup against a slumping Nats club tonight and then another start at Miami later this week. Haren has been pretty terrible this year, but his last two starts were good (although one was against the Marlins). He’s capable of shutting down the Pirates, of course, but he also presents an opportunity to get the offense back on track somewhat.
