Cardinals (10-4) at Pirates (5-8)

7:05 PM EST–PNC Park, Pittsburgh

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

On a dreary day in Pittsburgh, the Bucs will look to right the ship after an ugly loss last night and pick up a win against the hated Cardinals.

News and notes:

The forecast for tonight isn’t great, but as of now the rain is supposed to stop by the end of the afternoon. And if it doesn’t, fans heading to the game are in luck…it’s Pirates Umbrella Night.

The online ballot for the All Star Game is already out. It’s way too early, but if Pirate fans want to get Andrew McCutchen in as a starter they’ll need to vote like crazy starting right away.

Minor league update:

Gerrit Cole pitched for Bradenton yesterday. The good news is that he struck out seven in five innings, but the bad news is that he still allowed three runs. Jameson Taillon pitched the day before and struck out six in five innings, allowing just one run. He’s been excellent so far for the Marauders.

Elsewhere, Tim Alderson was promoted to AAA and had a strong debut there. Alen Hanson continues to destroy the ball for West Virginia. Stetson Allie continues to have zero control whatsoever: he walked four yesterday while recording only one out. Oh dear.

Also of note: A.J. Burnett will be on the mound for Altoona tonight.

Tonight’s starters…

Jake Westbrook (2-0, 0.64) vs. Kevin Correia (1-0, 1.50)

Westbrook is another Cards pitcher that you think is just mediocre, but then you look at his numbers and think otherwise. He’s off to a terrific start in 2012 and will present yet another big challenge to the scuffling Pirate offense.

Correia has surprised everyone so far this year by being the Bucs’ best starter – by far – through two starts. One problem – those were both on the road, where he was solid for most of last season. At home, he was 2-8 with a 7.71 ERA. Why? Nobody knows. But that has to change if he wants to stick around in this rotation – which he has a good chance at doing thanks to Jeff Karstens‘ injury.
