Pirates (70-60) at Brewers (62-68)

8:10 PM EST–Miller Park, Milwaukee

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

The Pirates are in Milwaukee for a weekend series against the Brewers. Since the Cardinals lost again yesterday, the Bucs enter the action just a half-game out of a playoff spot. St. Louis is at Washington this weekend and just lost SS Rafael Furcal for the season.

If the Pirates want to take advantage, they’re going to have to win some games at Miller Park. The Bucs are 3-3 this season at their former house of horrors, but didn’t play well the last time they were there and lost 2 of 3 to the Brewers at home last weekend. Milwaukee still has a losing record, but has been playing better lately and won’t be a pushover–and the Pirates still have six games left with the Brew Crew.

On to the roster moves. As we suspected, the Bucs brought up Alex Presley and Kyle McPherson and sent down Jeff Clement and Chase d’Arnaud. (They were officially sent to Bradenton, which allows them to return on Monday instead of in 10 days.) Presley and McPherson are now postseason eligible. McPherson will reportedly pitch out of the bullpen, meaning the final starting spot will go to Jeff Locke or Kevin Correia. The Pirates can still make one more Indianapolis player postseason eligible thanks to the fact that Charlie Morton is on the 60-day DL, so that could end up being Locke, Justin Wilson, d’Arnaud, or someone else.

Andrew McCutchen is out of the lineup today. It seems odd and frustrating since the team had the day off yesterday and the Pirates said there’s no injury, but he was banged up quite a bit over the homestand and I guess the Bucs see this as a chance to rejuvenate him for the stretch. I doubt he’ll sit again for the rest of the year. Presley will play center, and he’ll lead off (Tabata 2nd, Snider 3rd, Jones 4th, etc).

Tonight’s starters…

Jeff Karstens (5-3, 3.47) vs. Mark Rogers (2-1, 4.28)

Both these pitchers did a great job in last weekend’s series–each earned a win and neither allowed a run. Karstens might even be the Bucs’ best starter at the moment, so let’s hope the groin issue that forced him to come out on Saturday doesn’t bother him again. Rogers racked up a high pitch count despite shutting out the Bucs for five innings on Sunday, so it would be great if they can be patient, knock him out early, and get into the Brewers’ overworked and terrible bullpen.
