Wednesday, 7:05 PM (ROOT): Edwin Jackson vs. Charlie Morton Thursday, 12:35 PM (ROOT, MLBN): Jason Hammel vs. Wandy Rodriguez After the always-miserable off-day following the opener, the Bucs and Cubs will wrap up their first series of the year with a pair of games in quick succession. Wednesday’s game is the first night game of the year, of course, and as usual the Pirates offered the “Buc Night” promotion – selling a number of tickets for $1 and some food/drink items for $1 as well. It looks like those tickets sold out quickly so I would anticipate a good crowd. Charlie Morton will look to get off to a good start in 2014, fresh off his strong (shortened) 2013 season and contract extension this winter. I wouldn’t read too much into the Bucs making him the #2 starter (you’d think that would go to Gerrit Cole, who won’t pitch until Friday) — that might have more to do with matchups. The current configuration sets up Cole and Liriano to pitch against St. Louis on Friday and Saturday (…and then Volquez on Sunday…). Wandy has owned the Cubs since joining the Pirates, so Thursday gives him a good shot to show that he’s healthy and start off the year on a positive note. Edwin Jackson is no stranger to the Pirates, but Hammel (who will be making his Cubs debut) is. Both are decent righties coming off disappointing campaigns last season, but both definitely have a good amount of talent and stuff. The Pirates were obviously pretty quiet with the bats on Monday – maybe Neil Walker‘s blast will get them going. As you know, it’s early, but it would be nice to start the year off with a series win – especially a sweep – against one of the worst teams on the schedule and at home. GO BUCS.
