Are the Cardinals really pursuing Astros' Bud Norris and Lucas Harrell?

Let me preface this by saying that I really respect Peter Gammons.  He is one of the best reporters in the game.  However a tweet from him this morning had me scratching my head. Here is the tweet from Gammons at 11:23 AM this morning: "Cards are asking about a SS as well as P. Interested in Lucas Harrell and Bud Norris of Astros." The Cardinals currently have Joe...

Two Weeks to Opening Day, Who Heads North?

With opening day just over two weeks away who has turned some heads and will be making the trip to Minnesota to open the season, and who is headed a to the minors? They players in camp will be separated into three categories: Stone Cold Locks, Got a Shot, and Headed to Toledo or Other Employment. Each player will be accompanied by their spring training slash line, current as of...

2013 burning question: Detroit Tigers

Continuing from this morning's season preview of the Detroit Tigers... Just what are the Tigers going to do with their closer's job if Bruce Rondon doesn't grab the bull by the horns? The Tigers seem to be going with Rondon to start the year, and we touched on why their hesitation to go with Rondon is their fault after playing coy with the closer's job this...

Five spring training questions for Tigers

It's hard to believe but after Friday, the Detroit Tigers will have just 14 spring games left before they head north to start the regular season. While a lot of things were already settled before spring training started, there are a few more issues to be decided in the last two weeks. 1) Who will be the Tigers' closer? When the Tigers decided that Jose Valverde would not...

St. Louis Cardinals: Who should be the Cardinals' fifth starter?

The fight for the fifth spot in the St. Louis Cardinals' starting rotation has been one of the most followed stories throughout spring training. Manager Mike Matheny has held an open competition for the spot throughout spring camp and there are just two contestants remaining after Trevor Rosenthal's move to the bullpen last week and Michael Wacha's assignment to Memphis...

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/17/13

On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers had five games against the Miami Marlins minor leaguers. All were on the Miami side of the complex except for Peoria 2’s game, which was on St. Louis’ diamonds, all at Roger Dean. Only Peoria 2, the lowest-level club, was victorious. Not only did they shut out the Marlins’ fifth club, they almost no-hit them. Memphis (three...

St. Louis Cardinals: Will Adam Wainwright sign contract extension before opening day?

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that ace starter Adam Wainwright would make the opening day start when the team kicks off the 2013 season on the road at Arizona on April 1. Wainwright certainly deserves the opening day start, but will the Cardinals also reward Wainwright with a contract offer before then? As was discussed on Friday night's episode of The Cruddy...

2013 X-Factor: Detroit Tigers

You know the stars on the Tigers: Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and so on and so forth. Of course, none of them are really x-factors, but the Tigers still have plenty of players that are going to make an impact on their team this year that might be falling under the radar a little bit. My x-factor for the Detroit Tigers in 2013 is Alex Avila. Alex Avila...

You may say I'm a dreamer: Detroit Tigers

What else can baseball fans do in January but dream of October? In You May Say I'm a Dreamer, the Outside Corner staff will imagine the route to a World Series in 2013 title for all 30 teams. After falling short a year ago with a juggernaut roster, the Tigers took that same juggernaut roster into October and kicked the tar out of the best teams in baseball, winning the World...

Bouncing Back: Alex Avila

Like a lot of fantasy players, I’ll be waiting on drafting a catcher again this year. Catchers and closers are usually where I want to spend my last few picks or dollars, so I need to squeeze as much value out of them as I possibly can, hoping to hit big on a player that could just as likely end up on the wire in a month. There are a number of catchers who fall in this category...

Free agent Kyle Lohse should fire his agent Scott Boras

With just two weeks until MLB's opening day of the 2013 season, former St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher and current free agent Kyle Lohse is still looking for a home and a place to play this season. As was discussed on a recent episode of The Cruddy Show, there have been plenty of excuses made for why Kyle Lohse has not been signed at this point, most notably, that a team...

Cardinal Odds & The Friday Links

We're inching closer to real baseball, and today the Cardinals announced that Adam Wainwright will be the Opening Day starter.  This surprises no one. But there are still some big issues to resolve before the Cardinals start the season. So let's break down where we're at headed into the last 2 weeks of spring. Oscar. Will he make the team? Looks like this...

Jhonny Peralta helps Tigers beat Blue Jays

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Jhonny Peralta hit his first home run of the spring, and Rick Porcello allowed four hits and two runs in five innings to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Friday. Porcello, competing with Drew Smyly for the final spot in the Tigers' rotation, struck out four. Porcello allowed Andy LaRoche's solo homer to Andy LaRoche in the...

The Ides Of March

The Ides of Boesch is a day on the Roman Calendar corresponding with March 13, a date which has become notorious for Detroit Tigers spring transactions, as illustrated in the prophetic 1798 painting The Unconditional Release of Brennan. Will the Yankees be able to fix Brennan Boesch? Maybe. But let no one later claim that the Tigers “let him get away,” whatever happens down the...

Cardinals 5, Nationals 1

Adam Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings and Matt Adams hit a three-run homer in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday. Facing mostly Washington backups, Wainwright took a shutout into the sixth inning and allowed only three hits in his second consecutive impressive start. Jon Jay and Adams homered in a four...
