Found September 18, 2013 on The Outside Corner:
Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hits long home runs like they're going out of style. On Wednesday night in Philadelphia, Stanton absolutely brutalized this Ethan Martin pitch out of Citizens Bank Park. The ball landed on the roof of one of the concession stands in Ashburn Alley in center field, and the home run was measured at 463 feet, which seems way off in my mind. Ironic note: my dad is at the game tonight. A week and a half ago, I was at the game in Philadelphia when Evan Gattis did this to a baseball. Watch out, Phillies: when the Lucia family is in town, there's a high chance that your opponents are going to obliterate baseballs. [follow]

Marlins president David Samson to portray Lorne Michaels in play

In today's edition of The Theater Corner, we've come across a story from the Miami New-Times about Miami Marlins president (well, at least for now) David Samson playing Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels in a play called Not Ready for Primetime. Wait, what? Marlins fans already have March 31, 2014 in their calendars as the start of pre-season baseball. But the...

Miami Marlins: series preview at Nationals

Giancarlo Stanton has hit four of his 23 home runs against Washington this season. (Steve Mitchell/Getty Images) The Miami Marlins will conclude their final road trip of the season with four games in the nation’s capital against a Washington Nationals team desperate to stay in the thick of the National League playoff race. The Marlins are just 2-5 thus far on the trip after avoiding...

Giancarlo Stanton Hits Monster Home Run Onto Marlins Park Concession Stand (Video)

As expected, the Marlins have been terrible this season. But two players have saved them from outright, Astros-like embarrassment: Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton was up to his usual tricks Wednesday night against the Phillies, tying the game in the sixth inning with a mammoth home runs that landed on top of the Planet Hoagie concession stand beyond the center field...

Here's Adeiny Hechavarria's awesome catch - in Spanish

You've probably already seen this ridiculous play by Adeiny Hechavarria during Wednesday night's Marlins-Phillies game, where Hechavarria climbed the ladder to an absurd degree to rob Cody Asche of a hit. But have you seen it with Spanish commentary? Give it a listen. It's just like the super enthusiastic Spanish soccer announcer from The Simpsons, but on the...

Pierre ties DiMaggio, Marlins lose to Phillies

Juan Pierre is even with the Yankee Clipper. Pierre tied Joe DiMaggio on the all-time hits list when he doubled in the seventh inning of the Miami Marlins' 6-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. For a team with the second-worst record in the majors, these are still moments worthy of celebration. Pierre, pinch-hitting for pitcher Brian Flynn, hit a double to...

Hechavarria's glove helps Marlins sidestep Phillies' sweep 4-3

The box score shows how Ed Lucas' 10th-inning solo homer off Cesar Jimenez helped the Marlins sidestep a three-game sweep at Citizens Bank Park Wednesday. What it doesn't detail is who was mainly responsible for putting him in position to hit the difference-making blast in the 4-3 win The Marlins made two of their better defensive plays of the season. Who authored them should...

Lucas' HR gives Marlins 4-3 win

Ed Lucas homered in the 10th inning to lift the Miami Marlins to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. The Phillies loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning but could not score after Roger Bernadina struck out and Freddy Galvis grounded out to end it. The homer was the fourth of the season for Lucas. Miami's Giancarlo Stanton tied...

Marlins fail to deliver in 3-2 loss to Nationals

Defeat No. 97 in this wretched season for the Miami Marlins was quite similar to many that preceded it. A tight game that might have gone Miami's way with one or two hits at the right time instead turned out to be a 3-2 loss to the Washington Nationals on Thursday night. Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Marlins spent the rest of the night playing...

If the Marlins Weren’t the Marlins

I’ll admit that I don’t know a lot about the other sports, so I can’t speak to situations more messed up than what we’ve got in baseball. But in baseball — little details aside — we’ve got the A’s, and we’ve got the Marlins. The A’s consistently try really hard to win, despite the odds being stacked against them. Oakland has a brilliant front office, and they...

On Jeffrey Loria And Ownership

Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was in the news this week and, as usual, there was a decidedly unctuous odor to it. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported on Monday night of a power struggle between Loria and Larry Beinfest, the team’s president of baseball operations. Lining up with Loria is Dan Jennings, the vice president of player personnel. Lining up with Beinfest is Mike...

Bullpen Effective Overall But Phillies Fall in Extras

Zach Miner and Luis Garcia piggy backed for five innings of one run ball. Ethan Martin would enter in the 6th and surrender a two run moon shot from Giancarlo Stanton that may have actually reached the moon. The Phillies didn't make it easy on Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi who...
