Giancarlo Stanton‘s tape-measure bombs have earned the admiration of a few of his Team USA teammates. CBSsports.com’s Danny Knobler reports that several batting-practice pitches to the Marlins slugger landed in the parking lot of Arizona’s Salt River Fields during practice for the World Baseball Classic, causing Mark Teixeira‘s jaw to drop in disbelief. The Yankees first baseman said he worried for the safety of the windows on his car — which was parked 2,000 miles away in Tampa. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Teixeira said. “I’ve played with a lot of guys headed for the Hall of Fame, but I’ve never seen anything like it.” Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was similarly flabbergasted, insisting that the 23-year-old “cannot be human.” Jimmy Rollins to Giancarlo Stanton:"You cannot be real. You cannot be human." Stanton heard it all day at the USA workout.— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) March 05, 2013 Entering just his fourth season as a pro, Stanton is arguably the greatest home-run hitter in the game, with conquests that include breaking the scoreboard at Marlins Park with a deep shot and launching a homer at Coors Field that traveled nearly 500 feet. He’ll start in right field when Team USA opens up its WBC slate Friday night against Mexico.
