Barry Zito took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, Hector Sanchez's two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth and the San Francisco Giants rolled past the Atlanta Braves 5-2 on Thursday night for their fourth straight win. Fresh off a sweep at the rival Los Angeles Dodgers, the NL West leaders stayed hot on a chilly and fog-filled night along the bay. Zito (10-8) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked three before Freddie Freeman's two-run double off reliever Jeremy Affeldt broke up the shutout. With two runners on, Sergio Romo got pinch-hitters Jason Heyward and Juan Francisco to ground out for his sixth save. Hunter Pence, Brandon Belt and Pablo Sandoval all drove in runs to chase Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson (12-6) after 4 1-3 innings. Hanson gave up five hits and five runs while striking out four and walking three. San Francisco has won nine of 12 to take a three-game lead over the Dodgers in the division. Angel Pagan extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the first. He walked in the third, stole his 21st base and slid home on Sandoval's two-out blooper to left to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Pagan also walked leading off the fifth and Marco Scutaro singled to put runners on the corners. After Sandoval struck out, Pence bunted for an RBI single past Hanson to spark San Francisco's surge. Belt's hard grounder skipped off Freeman's glove at first for a two-base error, and Sanchez followed with a two-run double to push the Giants ahead 5-0. More than enough for Zito on this night. The high-priced lefty, often the sore in San Francisco's rotation, had hitters chasing his slow-moving breaking balls all over the strike zone - and out of it, too. Zito also helped himself by fielding Hanson's comebacker cleanly with two runners on in the second and picking off Dan Uggla at first base in the fourth. Fans chanted ''Barry! Barry! Barry!'' when he was announced at the plate with one out in the eighth. After Zito dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Brandon Crawford to second, the crowd gave him a standing ovation jogging back to the dugout. Martin Prado and Chipper Jones singled leading off the ninth to dash Zito's shot at a complete game. Freeman hit a two-run double off Affeldt for Atlanta's only runs, and Uggla walked. Javier Lopez - San Francisco's third lefty - struck out Brian McCann before Romo, a righty, came on to end it. Zito, the 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner with Oakland, last pitched a complete game in his first start of the season at Colorado on April 8, when he allowed four hits in a 7-0 win. NOTES: Giants All-Star C Buster Posey sat out for the second straight game because of tightness in his right hamstring. Asked if he would play Friday, Posey said, ''I don't see any reason why not.'' ... Heyward was not in the starting lineup with fellow left-hander Zito starting. ... The Giants honored retiring Braves 3B Chipper Jones with a video montage before the game. He received a standing ovation from fans and tipped his hat to the crowd from the dugout's top step. ... Giants RHP Ryan Vogelsong (10-7, 2.85 ERA) starts opposite Braves RHP Ben Sheets (4-3, 3.07 ERA) on Friday. --- Follow Antonio Gonzalez at: www.twitter.com/agonzalezAP

Giants moving on quickly, winning

Outside the Polo Grounds Pub and Grill, in the shadow of AT&T Park, the sign reads, "No More Melk, but Plenty of Beer." Inside the San Francisco Giants' clubhouse, the mood isn't quite that frivolous. But what did you expect the Giants to do after losing Melky Cabrera to a 50-game suspension, quit? The Giants don't operate like that. Baseball doesn'...

Giants Catcher Thinks the Inning is Over, When It's Not

After Tim Lincecum delivered a called third strike, Hector Sanchez thought is was the third out.  Sanchez proceeded to walk to the dugout as if the inning was over.  Fortunately for Sanchez he's not the most embarrassed Giant right now (that's write, Melky).  Baseball players occasionally do this, but it's rare to see the catcher forget how many outs there are.The...

Best Series Ever

Didn’t that all seem a little too easy? The Giants scored in the first inning of the first game of this series, and never gave up their lead. They were never winning by a significant margin, but the way Madison Bumgarner was pitching, even two runs of support was enough to feel comfortable. Heck, even after Sergio Romo coughed up a solo homer to make it a one-run game, Javier...

Fantasy Baseball: Examining Values of PED Players

As Melky Cabrera has reminded us, we can’t believe that everything we see on the baseball diamond is legit. As a fan of the game, it’s extremely frustrating, I know. If you’re a fan of the American League team that wins the pennant, I wouldn’t blame you if your anger doesn’t come out until October, as the All-Star Game MVP had a lot to do with the National...

Baseball's PED Climate Makes It Hard to Believe Players Enjoying Breakout Seasons Always Doing It Clean (Video)

In light of Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon testing positive for performance-enhacing drugs, it's tough for baseball fans to not think the worst of any players enjoying suspicious amounts of success this season. Not every player deserves to be believed guilty until proven innocent, but unfortunately, that's a reality that many will have to face as the positive tests continue...

Putting the “Legitimate” in Legitimately Dumb

What would MLB do if it turned out that Melky Cabrera was “legitimately” using PEDs?  For the same matter, what if Barry Bonds came out and told us that he had been using the “cream” and the “clear” but it was legitimate so we didn’t need to worry about it?  I’m pretty sure that the fans and MLB would call bullsh*t on both of them. By now I’m pretty sure you know...
