San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey's recovery from a broken ankle has continued with him catching bullpen sessions in the Instructional League.

The Giants had set a date of Nov. 1 for Posey to possibly begin catching again, meaning he is about three weeks ahead of schedule.

"He's been feeling good and progressing well, so there was no reason to wait," Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Posey also has been taking batting practice in a cage and will face live pitching soon. He is expected to be ready for the 2012 season.

On May 25, Posey suffered a broken left ankle that required reconstructive surgery following a collision at home plate with Florida's Scott Cousins, who lowered his shoulder and drove into Posey on a clean but violent play. Cousins was criticized for his actions in baseball circles but Posey harbored no ill will.

A former NCAA Player of the Year, Posey helped the Giants win the 2010 World Series in his first full season in the major leagues, batting .305 with 18 homers and 67 RBI in 108 games. He hit .284 with four homers and 21 RBI in 45 games this season.
