At Saturday's Giants baseball game in San Francisco, a man in the stands caught a foul ball with his bare hand while holding his daughter in his lap with his other hand.
It happened in the top of the fifth inning when Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder Alex Presley hit a foul ball down the third base side. The man was able to hold his daughter in his lap with his left hand while standing up and reaching for the ball with his right hand (and no glove), bobbling it for a second before catching it.
Great catch by the father, but most importantly, he never let go of his daughter. Because as we've seen in recent incidents like this Dodger fan and this baseball fan in Taiwan, going after a foul ball while holding onto your daughter can lead to disaster if you don't have your priorities straight.

Tim Lincecum: A Pitch F/X Breakdown of The Freak’s Struggles
Tim Lincecum had yet another shaky start last night against the Phillies and although things seemed to settle down over his last 5 innings, the concerns over what is wrong have not. After his first three starts, Lincecum sits at 0-2 with an ERA of 10.54 with a WHIP of 1.90. Last night was the longest start of the year for Lincecum as he lasted 6 innings as opposed to the 7.2 combined...
Giants, Madison Bumgarner Agree to Five-Year Contract Extension
Earlier today, the Giants announced that they have agreed to a five-year contract extension with Madison Bumgarner. He’ll be under contract with San Francisco through 2017, and the team also has options for 2018 and 2019 (2018′s a club/vesting option, and 2019 is just a club option). He’s guaranteed $35M, though in the unlikely event that he reaches Super Two status, he’ll...
BP Unfiltered: Watching Pedro Alvarez by R.J. Anderson
Later tonight, the Pirates will take on the Diamondbacks. Pittsburgh is unlikely to start Pedro Alvarez because Joe Saunders is scheduled to take the mound for Arizona. Alvarez as a platoon player isn’t what the Pirates envisioned for him back on Draft Day 2008, but the reality is more grim. There are slow starts, and then there are 1-for-19 with 12 strikeout starts. Why is Alvarez...
History Suggests Tim Lincecum Might Be Just Fine
After getting drilled for four runs in the first inning by the Phillies last night, the ever-growing worry surrounding Tim Lincecum reached a fever pitch. As Chris Cwik noted last week, his velocity continues to trend downwards in a pretty dramatic fashion, and he’s now getting hit on a regular basis while throwing 90 MPH fastballs. The combination of diminished velocity and...
2012 Fantasy Baseball Closer Report – Week 3
San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson is headed for a second opinion on his right elbow from Dr. James Andrews before deciding whether or not to have Tommy John surgery. Regardless if he has the surgery or not, he is going to be out quite awhile and manager Bruce Bochy has been talking up the dreaded closer-by-committee in place of Wilson. For now, Santiago Casilla and Sergio...
Monday 4/16 Minor League Roundup
AAA Indianapolis | Game 1 - Toledo 9 Indianapolis 2AJ Burnett made the rehab start in Indy on Monday and got knocked up. He threw 81 pitches through four innings on the mound, and allowed five runs on seven hits. Burnett walked four but was unable to strikeout any batters. Shairon Martis also had a pretty bad day giving up four earned runs in three innings of relief. Both pitchers...
The Myth of the Important Closer
With the news of Brian Wilson of the San Francisco Giants headed to the DL and likely out for the season I wish to discuss the importance of closers to the game of baseball. Closers are important parts of a team, they usually are the best pitchers in the bullpen, and often are more effective pitchers than the bottom of the rotation starters. But being a closer is the easiest job...
Tuesday 4/17 Minor League Roundup
AAA Indianapolis | Columbus 5 Indianapolis 1The Indians were only able to plate one run on Tuesday despite seven hits. Brandon Boggs and Kris Watts both went two for four. The only RBI of the night came from outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and Starling Marte didn't get any hits while striking out three times. Justin Wilson took the mound for the team and worked through six innings...
Jeff Karstens headed to 15-day DL
We kind of had a feeling that after Jeff Karstens had to leave last night’s game after the first inning with an inflamed shoulder that things might get worse. Well, things just got worse – Karstens has been placed on the disabled list. He’s the third Pirates starter to hit the DL within the first two weeks of the season (AJ Burnett and Charlie Morton started the year there...
Giants Extend Madison Bumgarner
The trend of giving out long term deals to premium young players continued today, as the Giants locked up Madison Bumgarner through at least 2017, and the deal gives them team options for both 2018 and 2019. In exchange for long term control over Bumgarner’s future, the Giants guaranteed him $35 million over the next five years, with an additional $5 million possible if it turns...
The Phils continue their three-game series with the Giants.

The Phils won the first game of the three-game series with a four-hit, four-run outburst in the first inning against eventual loser Tim Lincecum, who had been awful in...
