The San Francisco Giants were having a nice spring day in Arizona on Saturday. Exhibition baseball. A lot of sun.

Then, in one fell swoop, the entire day was turned upside down for the Giants.

First base coach Jose Alguacil was hit in the face by a foul ball off the bat of Kansas City Royals infielder Hunter Dozier. He was eventually carted off the field and sent to the hospital.

“Trainer Eric Ortega was quick to react, immediately putting a towel over Alguacil’s face as blood pooled on the dirt,” CSN Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic reported from Arizona. “Manager Bruce Bochy said Alguacil never lost conciousness.”

According to an official press release from the Giants, Alguacil’s status is not yet known. The good news here is that he did not lose consciousness. The bad news is that the veteran coach was wearing sunglasses when the ball struck him near the eye. There has to be some concern over damage to that area of the face.
