According to WFAN sports radio, the San Francisco Giants have signed shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18 million dollar contract. Renteria became a free agent after the Detroit Tigers declined to pick up his option for 2009. Renteria, 33, hit .270 last season with 10 homers and 55 RBI. Those numbers were far removed from his 2007 season with the Braves when he hit .332 with 12 homeruns and 87 runs scored. He also declined defensively last season with the Tigers. The Giants are banking that a return to the NL will rejuvenate his career. That might happen but I wouldn't have paid $9 million dollars a year to find out. On another note, ESPN spoke to Rafael Furcal's agent Paul Kinzer this afternoon. Kinzer said that despite what Rafael told the newspaper, there is another team who tendered an offer besides the A's, but that Furcal was mistaken and that it was not the Mets.
