Pagan made $3.5 million last year

Reports from CSN Sportsnet and Giants beat writer Andrew Baggarly’s twitter are indicating that the San Francisco Giants have traded away Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez for New York Met’s outfielder Angel Pagan.

Pagan, 30, has played six seasons in the Major Leagues with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets. Pending a physical, he is now a Giant.

Pagan has only played in two seasons where he had over 400 at-bats, but in those two seasons (2010 and 2011), he hit a combined .272/.332/.401 with a .733 OPS. His OPS+ isn’t too impressive at a cool 101,  and his combined WAR is 5.3 – 5.1 of which was coming off of his breakout 2010 season.

He is a similar type of player than Torres, as he is fast around the base paths by stealing 69 bases in those two years (274). Torres, in comparison has only 60 steals in his 415 game career with Detriot and San Francisco.

Pagan has some defense issues, however, his dWAR last season was -1.7, a down year for the guy who averaged 2.4 dWAR per 162 games. His Rtot suffered last year, as he was -17 total zone total fielding runs below average.

His walk rate improve from 7.5 percent in 2010 to 9.2 percent in 2011, while decreasing his strikeout rate from 16.8 percent to 13.0 percent. He is the new lead-off man for the Giants. He led off the Mets for 154 games over his career and he hits well when in the #1 spot. His line for the lead off position is this:

This is an upgrade for the Giants; they traded away expendible bullpen help in Ramirez, while sending away a decaying, 33-year-old Torres for a younger, more promising Pagan.

The Giants fulfilled three of their needs with this move: speed, lead-off hitting and an versatile outfielder. I approve.

So far the off-season was looking to be a boring one to Giants fans, but here is a little shimmer of hope in Brian Sabean winter meeting productivity. While we get to watch the Marlins go rampage with almost no money is interesting how conservative the Giants management has been.

Today I see a positive note on this off-season, even though there are better outfielders the Giants should be strongly perusing (a.k.a. Carlos Beltran).
