In part 4 of this multi-part series, we take a look at the trades of the Dayton Moore administration that were made in 2009 for the Kansas City Royals. Click the years to see the previous articles: 2006 2007 2008  As we move on to 2009 and beyond, it is important to note that the data begins to become a little less reliable.  The reason being that there are fewer years on which to judge a player.  If the Royals traded an established major leaguer for a good prospect that has yet to break into the major leagues, based on the formula we use, the Royals may not get any credit for the trade.  But overall, it should even out both ways, especially when we combine the WAR scores for all of the years at the end. As was illustrated in last week’s column, 2008 was a bad year for Dayton in terms of trades.  Injuries were to blame for part of this, as was plain bad luck.  Even so, by 21st century Royals standards, 2008 was not that bad of a season.  For one, they didn’t finish in l...

Duffy Admits His Need for Improvement

The Kansas City Royals roster is loaded with youngsters who were baptized by fire during the 71-91 campaign of 2011. Hopes were soaring high in September, as nearly every one of those pups seemed to be putting it together. But for the team to take the next step to contention, nearly every one of those youngsters will need to improve on what he’s shown thus far (save perhaps Alex...

The Royals Give Stand Pat A Chance To Play In 2012

Kansas City Royals fans are long suffering. No Royals playoff appearances since 1985, their last winning season in 2003 and three consecutive 100 loss seasons from 2004-2006 can wear down a fan, no matter how faithful. But the 2012 season has promise mixed with cautious optimism. With 12 rookies debuting in 2011 and only being nine games out of second place in the American League...

Will Alex Gordon Regress In 2012?

It was supposed to happen sooner.  He was supposed to be an All-Star and MVP candidate earlier than this; he was supposed to be the second coming of George Brett. Coming out of college he was looked at as a five-tool talent that could lead the Kansas City Royals back into relevance. He was the second pick in the 2005 draft, the Royals pushed him immediately to Double A and he hit...

Salvador Perez, 2012 Fantasy Sleeper

If you got into football a little early (shame on you) and stopped paying attention to baseball, you probably missed out on what Salvador Perez did. He got 158 plate appearances for the Royals down the stretch and hit .331/.361/.473 with three HRs. Of course that is a slightly limited sample, he had a .362 BABIP and won’t be 22 until May – all red flags. So, why do...

Player Profile #92: Billy Butler | 1B/DH | KC

Billy Butler might more aptly be named Billy Boring, but there’s something to be said for a player who bats .300 with moderate totals in everything else. Considering his ranks the past three seasons, never straying from the 85-92 range, it’s appropriate that we find Butler ranked a number 92 in our rankings. He’s an xBA outlier, likely due to his complete lack of...
