The remarkable ride continues for Edgar Gonzalez. From Class AAA to unemployment to the Mexican League to a deal with the Houston Astros and the chance to provide some depth to a rotation that needed it.

Elite major-league starter isn't supposed to be the destination of this train and it's way, way, way too early to predict anything like that for the 29-year-old journeyman. But after Sunday's five innings and one run allowed in Cincinnati, the Astros are very pleased with what they have.

"He looks like he's in command," manager Tony DeFrancesco said. "He's not panicking out there, and we're real pleased with his starts."

Six days after beating Pittsburgh, his ERA settled in at 1.74 with the one earned run he allowed Sunday. He used a much wider arsenal than he showed in his time with the Diamondbacks early in his career. He gave up two hits and one walk and struck out six.

"I was so focused on throwing the ball down in the zone, especially in this park where the ball flies a lot," said Gonzalez, who kept the Reds in the ballpark.

It wasn't all good news for Gonzalez, who left the game with a blister on his big toe on the right (push-off) foot. Trainers tried to work with it between innings, even sending him up noticeably late for an at-bat, but it was bothering him and he was removed as a precaution. Both he and DeFrancesco expect that the next start will be no problem.
