The Milwaukee Brewers' tough week for injuries continues to get worse. In the top of the second inning against San Francisco on Saturday, shortstop Alex Gonzalez left the game after he slid into second base, turning his right knee on the base while stealing. Gonzalez was called safe on the steal but jammed his foot into the base on a late slide. He immediately spun flat on his stomach and pounded his helmet into the dirt while writhing in pain. Gonzalez, 35, had to be helped off the field by Brewers manager Ron Roenicke and athletic trainer Dan Wright. He had an MRI on his knee after leaving the game, and the Brewers announced shortly after their loss to the Giants that he will join center fielder Carlos Gomez (hamstring) on the 15-day DL starting Sunday. In place of Gomez and Gonzalez, the Brewers will call up infielders Taylor Green and Edwin Maysonet from Triple-A Nashville. The move also prompted the team to put first baseman Mat Gamel, who tore his ACLearlier in the week,on the 60-day DL. Green has had a hot bat in 26 games in Nashville this season, hitting .289 with one homer and six RBI. Maysonet hadnt had quite as much luck at the plate, batting just .214 in the same period. Gonzalez had been a pleasant surprise for a ballclub that has struggled to hit consistently this season. Known as a defensive shortstop when he was signed to a free-agent deal in the offseason he has offered plenty of highlight-worthy plays already in the field -- Gonzalez has also provided some pop on offense. In 24 games, he was batting .259 with four home runs and 15 RBI. The injury to Milwaukee's shortstop is the latest in a string of mishaps for a club that remained fairly healthy all of last season. In the past week, the Brewers have seen Gamel sustain the season-ending ACL injury, left fielder Ryan Braun sit out with tightness in his Achilles' and Gomezhurt his hamstring Friday night. Throw in No. 5 starting pitcher Chris Narveson's season-ending shoulder injury from the weekend before, and Roenicke is suddenly working with a patchwork unit. Journeyman shortstop Cesar Izturis took Gonzalez's spot in the lineup and will likely get the first chance to replace Gonzalez in the starting lineup. Follow Ryan Kartje on Twitter.
