The Milwaukee Brewers filled a significant void on their roster by coming to an agreement on a two-year deal with free agent left-hander Tom Gorzelanny. Milwaukee had no lefty in the bullpen after deciding not to tender a contract to Manny Parra for the 2013 season. Ironically, Gorzelanny was thrust onto the market when the Washington Nationals made the same decision with him. Gorzelanny, 30, is a nice fit for the Brewers because he does not have to be used strictly as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen. He was almost equally effective in 2012 against right-handed hitters (.245 batting average) and left-handed hitters (.237). As a former starting pitcher, Gorzelanny also provides protection for a rotation that is in flux entering 2013. Gorzelanny made $3 million in 2012 and was eligible for salary arbitration. The Nationals opted to non-tender him rather than see his salary increase through that process, the same decision the Brewers made with relievers Parra, Jose Veras and Kameron Loe. Gorzelanny appeared in 45 games for the Nationals in 2012, all but one in relief. He finished 4-2 with a 2.88 ERA, allowing 65 hits and 30 walks in 72 innings with 62 strikeouts. He allowed seven homers. A second-round draft pick in 2003 by Pittsburgh, Gorzelanny's best year for the Pirates was 2007, when he went 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA in 32 starts. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in midseason in 2009. The following season, Gorzelanny went 7-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 29 games, including 23 starts. Gorzelanny was traded to Washington in January 2011. He went 4-6 with a 4.03 ERA that year in 30 appearances, split evenly between the rotation and the bullpen. Overall, in seven seasons in the majors, Gorzelanny is 44-45 with a 4.41 ERA in 193 games, including 111 starts. In 735 innings, he has allowed 742 hits and 320 walks (3.92 per nine innings) with 568 strikeouts (6.96 per nine innings).
