Sure it’s just “Spring Training.” But when a pitcher you’re going to rely heavily on this season puts up a stinker like he did today, there is cause for concern. The Phillies fell to the Tigers, 10-6. However, the focus is on the awful outing from Roy Halladay. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs, including a grand slam to Ramon Santiago. And that’s against a lineup missing Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, and Torii Hunter. What’s worse is that Halladay’s velocity was sorely lacking. According to the beat reporters with the team in Florida (all of them) he was routinely in the mid-80′s on the day. It’s a far cry from where he needs to be. Following the game, Halladay spoke with reporters and blamed it on his new workout and throwing routine. That’s not enough to quell fears that we may be dealing with a damaged pitcher. Sure, it’s still early, and I’m certainly willing to give Halladay a start or two to figure things out. However, it’s certainly something to keep a watchful eye on – no doubt about it. Chase Utley hit his first home run of the spring after he’d been moved from second base to DH because of a wet field. Ben Revere was 3-for-3 with two doubles, one coming just short of a home run. Something he’s never accomplished in a regular season game.
