The November 21st, 2012 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Angels add three to 40-man roster, Kuroda signs with the Yankees, considering a trade for James Shields and much more...
The Story: The Angels added Brandon Sisk, Ryan Brasier and Travis Witherspoon to their 40-man roster in lieu of the Rule V Draft.
The Monkey Says: Sisk and Brasier both have shots of earning the final spots in the Angels bullpen out of spring training, though neither have much upside. Witherspoon, however, is a sleeper prospect who finally seems to be putting it together, so adding him to the roster was a must to prevent him from being plucked away.
The Story: Hiroki Kuroda has agreed to terms to return to the Yankees for 2013.
The Monkey Says: So much for Plan B. The Halos had supposedly been targeting Kuroda as a fallback option should they fail to re-sign Zack Greinke, but that obviously is off the table now. Who is Plan C? We have no idea, which is kind of scary.
The Story: Considering the idea of the Angels trading for James Shields.
The Monkey Says: I like Shields and would be in favor of adding him, but he is a glorified #3 starter. Shields struggles with consistency, but he misses bats and eats a ton of innings. However, my real problem with him is what it would cost the Angels to trade for him. The Halos and Rays match up well trade-wise, but a big part of that match is Peter Bourjos and the Angels now find themselves counting on him again, so he may not be expendable, at least no until they line up a replacement not named Vernon Wells.
